Default Replacing nearside rear damper on my 01 WRX Bugeye

Recent 50k service highlighted a weaping nearside rear damper. Quoted £120ish plus fitting. Can get a replacement from Graham Walker ltd for £80ish delivered so wondering how difficult it is to do myself. Would I need any specialist tools or not?

Would it be worth replacing both rear dampers at the same time?

cheers

Stu

I got replacement KYB shocks for a reasonable price from Camskill. I think it is recommended you change them as a pair. My Dad did mine, the only specialist tools needed I think are some spring compressers. It is a straight forward job, but but he new what he was doing.

I fitted some BC coilovers from the APEX groupbuy on Monday, I've never done it before and found it was relatively easy and straight forward, the only problem I had was the lower bolts (2 on each damper front & back) were really tight and needed a ratchet and bar to undo them.

Was obvious once the wheel was off, 3 x 12mm bolts on the top mount behind the rear seat (not too tight) and 2 x bolts on the bottom of the damper, on the rear the nut on the top bolt was 15mm, and the bolts and lower nut were all 19mm.

I didn't need spring compressors due to taking the damper and spring off as one unit, but you will definately need a good set for taking the spring(s) off seperately.

The rear top mounts are behind the rear seat, 2 x 12mm bolts to take the rear bench out (very easy), then 4 x 12mm bolts for the back part of the seat on the bottom, then unhook the back (obvious when your doing it).

The top mount bolts look really arkward to undo but using a 12mm ratchet for 2 of them is pretty easy, and using a spanner for the one tightest to the car is easier than it looks.

Remember to put the car on axle stands so you can give the bolts some "welly" without any mis-haps
