can anyone tell me a good suspension upgrade for the above car 2001 bugeye wrx , im having problems with the rear of the car feeling like its about to break away but it never does all the suspension is standard and in very good conditon .
any ideas on a solution , whether it be springs or full upgrade any help would be good thanks a lot .

Adjustable rear ARB and solid droplinks would be a good place to start!

Hi mate ,

I've got a bugeye wrx with the following :

Eibach Pro springs

KYB adjustable dampers

22mm adjustable rear antiroll bar

Powerflex rear drop links

Prodrive geometry settings

Pretty good setup , reasonable compromise between control and comfort . But there is always the AST coilover set up which I'd probably go for if I was going to do it again ( and still might ) .

Is the problem with the rear that you want it to let go and it won't or you think it's nervous and it's going to let go when you'd rather it didn't ?

thanks for the input - the car is feeling like it wants to break away and go sideways but it never has as yet, iv had all sorts of cars from capris mk1 escorts,bmw e36 the list goes on - although im happy ish with the handling it does feel odd might just be how the subarus handle corners the rear does feel soft ish under pressure .

keep the input coming - are prodrive springs a rip off or worth the money cos i think ill start with the springs first .

Might be an idea do have the geometry looked at first , if you've not had it done the settings could be a long way out .

Prodrive springs ? don't know went with the eibachs

I went for the Eibach's plus geometry setup on my bugeye wrx, all done by Powerstation. It now feels a lot better in the corners, although the back end does still feel a little bit wallowy if I really chuck it into a corner.

I should probably get a rear arb and solid droplinks (probably whiteline) but each time I've got spare cash I either spend it on exhaust parts (now bought a full decat system) or Stella.

Does it feel bouncy at the rear? My rears shocks are on the way out on my MY01... end result is that the back does step out on exit of corners....

Could be the problem.... 5 years seems to be the expectancy of the shocks according to my garage?

I can support the Eibach/KYB AGX/Whiteline ARB + droplinks and geometry route. I also have front Whiteline ARB and links and antilift kit and camber bolts f+r. Drives like a go-cart. Nice.

And how is the ride affected when in "normal" driving mode?

I use to notice similar problem on my bug, rear suspension alway seamed slow to react on fast direction changes.
Solved by fitting:-
Prodrive blue spring kit
Whiteline 22mm adj rear arb
Whiteline alloy heavy duty droplinks
Whiteline rear solid mount-kit
Whiteline adj front arb
Whiteline ALK
Front & rear strut braces
Full geometry set-up by Curtis @ Powerstation
Ditched the PZeros for Goodyear F1's

Cant recommend this stuff highly enough and Powerstation really now their stuff about Impreza's.

Our springs are made for us by Eibach but are definately NOT a rebranded Eibach part. We spend months developing the kits for each new application and go through many different rates and lengths to get the handling balance we need for each discrete model. This work is done in the UK by Prodrive and doesn't include even Eibach's chassis engineers in the development or the spec other than the production element of the process.

We are very aware of the foibles of the suspension systems on Subarus and there are one or two limitations that are overlooked by some proprietry spring manufacturers. To just lower the car by Xmm and make the springs stiffer by Y% doesn't necessarily work. We also supply bumpstops if we feel they are necessary which I don't believe is the case with ANY other sports spring kit for these cars.

Also, I'm still a little unsure what difference I would gain between uprated shocks & springs than going with coilovers. Im not 100% what coilovers are??

A coilover unit is the term generally applied to a McPherson strut type damper unit that uses a small diameter spring with an adjustable platform height. Using this method it's easy to change spring rates and rideheights for competition requirements or testing but they do have some limitations for road use such as high levels of 'stiction' due to the sidelads on the damper, which can spoil the ride.

Thanks for the info. I think i will not be opting for coilovers, as I dont need to adjust my suspension evertime i go to Tesco.

Subaru main dealer and discount dont normally appear in the same sentence.

Bugeyes have a common problem with wearing out the rear shocks... If you push the car down at the back and it feels soft (mines rock hard and difficult to push down) then the shocks are fubbared.... I had Spec C struts with my eibachs fitted by powerstation and it transformed the car (I had also previously had the rear anti roll bar and drop links done)
