Default camber bolts for front of classic

OK I've searched the forum to death but cannot resolve the following issue. I've just got some adjustable camber bolts for my MY99 UK turbo, all the suppliers I looked at list the same bolts for front and rear - 14mm. However, upon removing the standard front upper camber bolts, the new ones are a loose fit, and the shank on the originals and hence the hole in the hub appear to be about 16mm diameter. Also, in the fitting instructions, it states that the new camber bolts are for replacing non-adjustable bolts only, and not existing adjustable bolts. Hence the confusion......should I be replacing the front LOWER non-adjustable bolts with the new camber bolts, or do I need some 16mm(?) bolts to replace the original UPPER bolts, or something else???

Many thanks, Richard.

The 14mm camber bolts use a special tab washer on the assembly wich is 2mm thick (hence 14 mm v 16mm)
You MUST put the tab in the right place on fitting the bolt. The tab sit alongside the eccentric part of the 14mm bolt. This takes up the huge 'slop' in the assembly.

the camber bolt usually goes in the (edited!) LOWER hole.
I found such instructions with my bolts (Whiteline) are very generalistic and not specific to Imprezas.

you need to get the assy right and all will be well!

hope this helps a bit,
Graham

Thanks for the reply Graham. It is a difficult problem to describe. The new bolts work fine on the rear - I am using the tab washers as specified - they take up the 'slop' in the eccentric part of the shank (which is about 12mm) immediately below the bolt head, and the larger diameter non-eccentric part of the shank (which is the bit that is 14mm) is a snug fit in the upper hole of the hub. However the fronts appear to be different - when I said they were a loose fit, I was referring to the fit of the larger diameter non-eccentric part of the bolt shank (14mm) within the upper hole in the hub (which appears to be about 16mm). Looking at the standard camber bolts that come with the car, the threaded part of the shank is the same size as the whole rear bolt, but the larger diameter non-threaded part is about 16mm, which is thus a snug fit in the upper hole of the hub (16mm). Hence it appears to me that the larger diameter non-eccentric part of the new bolt also needs to be 16mm in order to be a snug fit in the hub upper hole. Hence my confusion, as it appears I need different bolts for front and rear???

At the front the camber bolts should only be used in the lower hole to replace the non-adjustable bolt.

It wont fit correctly in the top hole and offers no advantage compared to fitting any under-sized loose fitting bolt in that hole.

To re-iterate what Duncan has said, on my MY02 WRX the camber bolts are fitted in the lower hole at the front and work fine, currently running -2.5 degrees at the front, I just need to get some more for the back!

Neil

(apologies for the needless reply - I just want to get rid of the new banner saying I haven't submitted a post recently!)

Thanks all for the replies, good to hear from people who have done it - replacing the front LOWER bolts seems to be the solution......it's just that you keep seeing references to 'replacing the existing camber bolts with the new ones', but that certainly doesn't seem to be appropriate.

Richard.

sorry for the late post, but today I aligned the camber, etc... and the standard camber bolts only adjust to 0,42'? I tried to fit them in the rear since the coil-overs have camber adjustment but they don't fit, I need some 12mm bolts. so, should I buy not-standard 14mm camber bolts for the front lower holes or 12mm bolts? and for the rear should I also buy the 12 or the 14mm ( and fit them in the upper or lower holes? )?

sorry for asking these again but I'm not familiar with some words...

whiteline part number ends in 414 for the correct bolt for an impreza, they have a 14mm shank.

Although we use non whiteline ones Part number 81260. (make unknown as I've never looked lol)

However they do need twatting into the strut holes as they are quite a tight fit.

What degree are you trying to achieve Rich ??

For the front, if the standard bolts are not giving you enough, buy some adjustable top mounts, namely NOLTECS.

For the rears if you are trying to increase camber face the TAB IN and stick it in the TOP hole.

badly descripted by me I suppose...

The largest part, the eccentric bit.. should be 14mm.

ok, like I said before, I don't know some words... thank you.

when I mentioned 12 or 14mm I meant the thinner part... so if I get the 14mm bolts the thinner part as 12mm ( probably ) ok, now I understand, thanks again.

I've looked high and lo for it but it's gone!
Can you psot back up please (it is for someone else)

I never got a read-out from Curtis of my car so can't help this individual...

sorry for hijacking this thread again, but the standard camber bolts shouldn't adjust max -1,5 front camber? I don't understand why mine only adjusted -0,42... maybe it has something to do with the KW coil-overs?

Do your struts have elongated holes in them? (where they bolt to the hubs?)

yes, in front and rear, the top holes. I think in front only one top hole is elongated, at rear I think the two upper holes are elongated...

The camber bolts go in the bottom hole, but the tab needs to go in the right side of the bolt shank (that word again) to get full travel. Have you checked that Carlos??

I have only used the standard camber bolts in the upper holes but the max camber is -0,42, shouldn't be -1,5? I'm going to buy 2 pairs of camber bolts so I can adjust better the camber. you say the new bolts go into the bottom holes, but those holes are normal ( round, I think )...

I might have the original fitting instructions from Whiteline still, but check the web site
www.white.com.au and find them there to help you.

when we fit camber bolts to the rear we use the top hole.
Standard camber bolts in the front are also in the top hole.

The whiteline camber bolts have a total "throw" of 1,30 mins (1.5 degrees) and they don't work in elongated holes very well at all.

so, that means when you put whiteline front camber bolts you use the bottom holes? or you just use the standard bolts on upper holes? I still don't understand why I just get 0,42' in front with standard bolts...
