Default clunking from classic suspension

I have a loud "clunk" coming from the rear left corner when going over some bumps. The best way to describe it is a metallic "thud/clunk" as the wheel tracks over rough surfaces or when going over a speed bump.

Would this suggest the shock absorber needs replaced, or could it be another suspension component? If it is the shock, could you reccomend a supplier?

Thanks,

Brian.

Almost easy to say they all do that.
Graham

Always the left rear iirc too.

Thanks Graham. Just to clarify - when you say they all do that, do you mean that the shock is fine and it is simply a noise they make, or that yes, the shock is broken and needs replaced? The noise has only really started happening recently.

Does your car have its jack mounted at the rear left of the car? If so, check that its secured properly. I had a similar noise on my skyline that ended up being that the jack wasn't tightened up fully in its mount and every speed bump it clunked which had me worrying about all sorts!

Hi Paul,

I've checked the jack and it's not that. The car's handling has been affected also.

Cheers,

Brian.

Mt AVO coilovers did it in the rear NS corner (none of the others) and the strut damper was shot bigtime, but so was the OS rear too and that was quiet.
Over sleeping policemen my AST's do it now, and only that corner again.
They are new and normally cost a LOT of $$$$$

It could be the top mount, but very hard to know unless you strip the corner, check and re build/align.
I am sure I've read the Bug-eye's do it too sometimes.

I thought that this problem was down to the spring not being perfectly aligned to its seat. Mine does it very slightly at very low speeds. If I twist the spring in the seat, the rubber of which is quite worn anyway, it stops, then starts again about a week later.

I can buy that theory as well.
On a big bump, like a speed bump outside a school, the spring compresses quite a lot and twists on the mounts suddenly, but the nise (on mine) was much more metal-to-metal.

I had the car at a garage to get a wheel bearing changed on that corner, and it started hapening on the way home from there. I think this is most likely just coincidence, however the car is to be sold and I really need to fix the problem soon.

I'll strip the suspension this week and see if it's the damper that needs replacing. I called Subaru for a price - and they told me it's the same part as a normal uk turbo, does this sound right bearing in mind my car is an STI Version 3? I was under the impression the suspension was different on STI models.

Thanks for your help so far,

Brian

i have a similar problem on my car, but from the front passenger side. i was told it is the top mount on the strut, it has a pillowball arrangement so im told and this is normally the cause of the problem. need to have it looked at properly though

My Sti v3 dampers were black (not Sti pink) and are KYB make.

I do not think they are v3 age UK, but could be my99 UK.
