Question Trip to Powerstation for suspension geometry

Hi

I'm going to Powerstation this afternoon to get my WR1 suspension geometry setup. My reason for this is becuase I'm getting a lot of wear on the inside of the nearside front tyre.

I have the WR1 geometry settings on a fax from Subaru, but when speaking to Powerstation, they mentioned that they rarely use Subaru's settings & there are several options.

I'm sure they will advise me when I get there, but I'd like to have some time to think about my options & ask any advice from other SNetters.

I don't track the car, but I do some fast road stuff (eg Exmoor). I used to have a 99my Turbo (on Bridgestone SO2s) which I could chuck around far more than the WR1. I suppose some of that is the increased power & weight of the WR1 & also the P Zero Neros which I don't really rate. I'd like to get some of that 99my feel back, unless you guys think that it's down to the Pirellis?

Powerstation will do wonders for the geometry setup and handling. Goodyear gds3 F1's will make a difference aswell.

Have fun, see if you get a test in the T25 or new 06 sti from Iain next door

Andy

I usually find that test drives get expensive for me.... I've read a bit about the F1s & will probably go for a set soon.

Pippyrips

I think a lot of suspension mods have positive & negative effects. I've read Mike Wood saying that the standard Subaru WR1 settings should be fine for road use, but then I don't really understand suspension too much.

Pound for Pound I'm sure this is one of the best mods around.... keep us informed on what you think of it when you drive home.

Hi, I'm back home so here's my first impressions.

bear in mind that most of the trip was motorway - which tells me nothing. The first opportunity was getting some Optimax at the Welcome Break, just south of Avonmouth bridge on the M5. There's a tight sliproad leading straight off the motorway into the service station, you need to take it a little carefully because of the high kerbs. I took it as quick as I usually do, but this time there was no drama. I usually feel a little edgy as the car feels upset on this corner, but this time, it just felt fine. No hint of any suspension problems - it just went around fine. Next more motorway driving before taking my junction exit. Some short dual carriageway work with a couple of nice big roundabouts had me pushing 85% around them with no drama again. I then got close to home with about 2 miles around country lanes. I didn't really hammer the car, but I didn't hang around either. The car felt well set-up around the lanes & going around my favourite off-camber S-bend I easily got the the limit of the (crappy) tyre adhesion. Previously, I'd have had problems taking the bends in a commited way.

My thoughts now I'm home is that the car doesn't feel like I've had a suspension upgrade, but it feels a much better all around car. On bends which I'd treat with too much respect previously, I can now go into in a more commited way - later on the brakes & a better feel to the steering.

Thanks to Nick at Powerstation for a good job.

A further thought.... What the hell do Subaru think they are doing selling me a £30k car where the suspension is completely out of wack!?!?!? Rear camber difference of 17', rear toe diff of 38', front camber diff of 35', front toe diff of 27'.

I assume that's a joke?

Quote from Mike Wood: "If you want to make the rear a bit looser you could try reducing the toe-in down towards 0 but don't be tempted to make it toe out as it will feel very unstable at easy to get into snap oversteer... "

My rear toe figures before putting right:
left: +0°29'
right: -0°09'
Now that's unsafe!

Prodrive have not done what they were contracted to do.

Just wait until you are on your favorite strip of country lane, fresh in the morning with the turbo taking cold damp air...
and the chassis actually feels right!

Nick I assume your a happy man then as I mentioned earlier Pound for Pound it's one of the best mods money can buy I have had it done on a bug eye and a classic now and it inspires the driving... in a safe way I will add.

£60 + VAT. My rear suspension was so out of wack that I had an adjustable bolt thingy fitted for an extra £10 or so.

Scoobnov, I'm planning to have the same on my Rb5, again a 200+ mile round trip.
How much was the total price? And more importantly ws it worth it?

Knowing him he'll take the scenic route, so don't expect a reply....till Sunday!

Will be interested to hear what he thinks of your famous bump steer mod.

No.
Still racing round wondering why Subaru didn't do this chassis mod in the factory!

Probably enjoying himself.

might have to get mine done..... elites have set it up but at silverstone yesterday it suffered understeer, not sure if its the toyo T1-s or the set up TBH maybe back to RE070's is called for.... as the spec'c' is needing a service soon might as well get a few things sorted while there... makes the 200 mile trip worth while then.....

Tyres do not induce understeer or fix it.
Call Curtis/Andy/Rich at PoerStation before you travel, they will dial much of it out, especially starting with a Spec C (lucky you!)

Spoke to scoobnov2 at the weekend. He's very impressed with the way PS have set up his Type R. It's taken away the nasty understeer and grip is now on another level compared with before.

He's also very impressed with the Yoko Parada's. And the Tein springs.

It's a fair trek from Manchester but you won't regret it.
