Smile 2005 STI PPP - WHAT SPRINGS?????

Just spoke to Tsl Motorsport regarding upgrading the springs on my 2005 Sti ppp. Basically, I've just fitted Kahn 19" Rsv's and the car just sits that bit too high. Heard from a couple of people on here that the Prodrive springs don't really lower the car by any noticable amount however, the handling is greatly improved. This is what Tsl said in there reply via email:-

'We have recently fitted the Prodrive Springs to our 05 STi and to be honest, havn't noticed a massive difference in either the drop or noticable handling gain. Eibach will have their spring kit out later in the summer, so we wait with baited breath for that. When you come over have a drive in our car and see what you think.'

Our spring kit lowers the car by about 20mm at the front. As the 05MY car has revised damper lengths and reduced bump travel, this is as low as you can go without the car sitting on the bumpstops at rideheight. Also included in our kit are new front bumpstops which allow a small amount more travel and improve the ride as it's not constantly hitting it.

Lowering the car by more than our springs allow will make the car understeer badly and have an awful ride. The handling will not be good either as you'll get understeer off the throttle as it sits on the bumpstops and then it'll snap into oversteer when you open the throttle as it unloads the outside front tyre and allows it to grip again.

What a load of rubbish from TSL....

I bought a 05STi and having had a UK Turbo, P1 and 22b, I know how Imprezas are meant to handle but this car was totally sh*t!! First thing I did was to get rid of the 17" wheels with Bridgestone RE070 semi slick tyres and change them to the PFF7's with GSD3's. Its the first time I've had these tyres and I have to admit they improved the grip of the car immensely but the sidewalls are too soft for my liking. If you suddenly shift direction at high speed, you can feel the car wallow and it isn't as sharp as my previous cars with stiffer sidewalls.... looks like i'll be going for Pirelli P-Zero Neros or Michelin Pilot Sport 2s next.

Anyway, after that, I changed the springs and the car looks like its riding at the right height now. It doesn't look as low as a WR1 but is a massive improvement on the height of the standard car. Ride wise, you can tell the difference as soon as you drive off. The steering feels better, the car corners much better and you will instantly be able to corner at much higher speeds with feeling scared that the car is going to bite! I would recommend the Prodrive springs.... best money I've spent on the car so far.... those guys know what they're doing.

The P1 had major time and development from Prodrive and they sorted the handling out on it... without a lie, I reckon my P1 with 280bhp would have easily beaten my 22b with 350bhp on country roads because of the handling.... trust in Prodrive.... you won't go wrong!

Not sure I'd trust Prodrive. When they fitted the springs to my WR1 from new, they just stuck them on & left the suspension geometry in a dangerous condition.

The springs were fitted at Subaru's Distribution centre, not by Prodrive. The geometry would have also been reset at the same time and it should also be checked as part of the PDI before you take delivery.

The only involvement we had was coming up with the concept for the car in the first place; specifying, developing, testing and refining all the parts; testing them on the production car when it arrived and confirming the settings, then supplying them in bulk to Subaru. The rest was down to Subaru and the dealers...............

Elmer, what make & size of tyres are using now? How do you find them?

I've got Goodyear 235/40 ZR 18 91Y GSD3's.... should have listened to Mike Wood and gone for the Michelins with 95Y!

Thank you for your reply Mike.

I apologise if Prodrive was not involved in the suspension geometry, but I was told this by my dealer. I am upset about this because the geometry settings on the car sold to me were so out of wack as to be dangerous. It has dampened my enthusiasm for my car for over a year.

So are the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's 235/40 ZR 18 95Y the ones to go for Mike?

I've just ordered my PFF's without tyres - due next week according to dealer.

Oh - and the 05 STI spring kit also - hmm can't wait!!

arfan,

why are you so desperate for 30mm drop - it seems like it's just all bling and show rather than making a positive handling upgrade You've heard what the experts have said about that much drop...

Has a mate with a "phat slammed mota" gone to 29mm and you have to go lower?

Very simple lesson for you all. Listen to Mike Wood. 19" wheels is an absolute no no for me. I bought a Subaru to enjoy the cars handling, not ruin it. 18's maximum wheel size. And 30mm + drop in height? Why?

PS. What I've said above has been thorughly researched, in depth by the likes of Prodrive.

Afran WAKE UP

Are you sure you know what you are doing? Is it a small remote control car you have?

Listen to what the "EXPERTS" are saying look and listen

Improve the "how low can you go" image i think

I was like that in my MK2 Escort when i was 17

Are you 17? or just a little daft?

If you really want to go low then take the standard springs and cut a coil or two off (axle grinder). Won't do the handling any good but will properly slam it.

Alternatively you need to look at adjustable height coil overs. These kits ain't cheap, but can drop it very low and make it very hard for a great handling tarmac racer. Only problem with that is the roads in this country are poor and you won't find the smooth surfaces the setup will be tailored for. Benefit of the coil overs though is that you can run it normal height with normal hardness for day-to-day driving and then drop it on the deck for the shows.

Personally I’d put Eibach’s on (when out) and get the geometry done.

I don't think there are street coilovers that keep the standard suspension travel while reduce the ride height by more than 30mm so the only answer to your question is uprated springs (I prefer the Prodrives also but this is your choice).

Sorry have to completely disagree with the above comment, a set of 17" wheels shod with Bridgestone RE070 blows a set of 18" wheels with GSD3's clean out of the water, I know I have both on a STi UK 02 with Prodrive springs and uprated anti roll bar.
The only thing about the RE070 is the slightly twitchy performance in the wet, this, and really cold weather is the only time the GSD3's would have the advantage.

I have had the prodrive springs put on my 04sti & it definately looks lower. When parked next to my friends (we both have changed to 18" wheels), mine looks dramatically lower. This is not just my opinion, it is of a few of us. I feel the ride is far better & gives more confidence. The only time they are not as good is if you find a mega pothole. They then make an awful bang.
I know this is not an 05, but I would imagine that there will be very little difference.
If they are very similar, I would recommend them.

Please learn who's who here, and find your caps lock key.

Bye bye.
