Question

Are Eibach springs good option for lowering the STi?
What other spring solutions are there in the market?

Any comments appriciated.

Prodrive use Eibach springs on their suspension upgrade, so they cant be too bad. I would be wary of just lowering it with springs though, there are several threads on BBS with reasons why not.

Ian has a point, it's much cheaper and less problematic to lower the car by setting your tyre pressures to 5psi all around!

A friend of mine fitted Eibach lowering springs to his MY98 UK, and while it looked good, they did not go well with the standard dampers. I followed him for several miles round some good bends at speed, and his car was bouncing all over the place. The effect was enough to seriously hamper his ability to 'make good progress'.

I've been in an STi with HKS lowered springs and standard dampers - this car was run with 17 Oz STs and Yokohama tyres as recommended by HKS Europe.

The car handled very well at lunatic speeds and cornering aspects - it was piloted by James Kaye (BTCC) so he should know.

Although he did say that it was awful with other tyre/wheel combinations.

Thumbs up

My MY 96 WRX came from Japan with Eibach lowering springs and Bilstein shocks. The ride is firm yet compliant. Body roll is minimal. Handling is very throttle adjustable. If you brake hard into a corner and then get on the power, it oversteers. Powerslides to order. If you go into a sharp corner too fast it tends to understeer, though as soon as you get the weight on the front wheels again that stops. Passengers often comment on how like a go-cart it handles. Get the springs and the shocks.

Charles,

I have Eibach springs on my `94 WRX and have just purchased MRT front and rear (adjustable) anti-roll bars with solid drop links, and also an anti-lift kit (courtesy of Scoobymania, Nottingham). Geomerty to be set as per Prodrive settings. I too have been advised that springs should not be changed alone. I am therefore, interested in some shocks in the near future. Are Bilsteins adjustable? And how much do they cost?

A lot of my Subie pals are running the Eibach springs over here in the states... I have heard no complaints.

Myself, I have the H & R springs on my Subie and they ride great. Not too stiff, didn't lower the car too much, great ride. Now all I need is "real" struts and I'll be set!!

Kevin,

Bilsteins are not adjustable. I do not know how much they cost as they were on the car when it came from Japan. I should imagine they cost about 350 pounds a set. I reckon the Prodrive geometry settings should be an improvement, as long as you do not mind the resulting uneven front tyre wear.

It is not a problem. Just swap the tyres front to back and left to right. If they are directional - i.e. SO2's - you will have to take the tyres off the wheels. I got about 20k miles out of a set of S02's. I am on my second set.

I hope you get your car set up the way you want.

Regards

Charles

Charles,

Thanks for the advice, running on Toyos at the moment, although advised that S02s are better though more expensive. Will swap the tyres about and see....

Cheers,

Kevin
