Question

When driving I get the most annoying (and and quite loud) knocking sound from the front passenger side of my scoob - any sort of speed, worse over smaller bumps uneaven road.

If I bounce (gently) the front passenger side down with one hand touching the top of the strut (the rubber cover) I can feel a clicking as the knocking happens. It may or may not be the same noise, but it's very worrying and the drivers side doesn't do it!

Is my strut fecked or do I just need to take it off and put it all back together again?

It's a 96 STi 2 Type RA and has been lowered on HR springs.

Could well be anti-roll bar link. Check for play when bouncing the front end.

Arrow

Check that your strut top nut is tight on the bearing.
Remove rubber cap in the centre you will see it.
If that is ok get it on some ramps (or crawl underneath) and have a look around the drop links and anti roll bar and see if they move by hand, should be pretty solid.
Did my rear drop links yesterday and they were knocking slightly could move them on the bush a bit.

Thumbs up

Cheers mate, given the droplink a good hard wiggle and it isn't moving at all.

Can I tighten the strut top without removing the strut completely?

I've got a new topmount on the way in case it's that, but I'd rather not have to take the whole strut off if possible. If I remove the arb droplink does anyone know if the strut will drop far enough for me to swap topmounts or am I going to have to remove it from the wishbone?
