Is it and "easy'ish" job to change the springs on MY02 ? Do I need a special tool to do the job ? if so where can I get what I need ?

try and remove the big nut at the top of the strut while the struts are still on the car as the cup and damper shaft may turn if you take it off first. then take the three smaller nuts off (and the two larger ones near the stub axle) and jack each corner and the shocks will fall out.

dont forget a decent get 4 wheel alighnment when its finished.

you'll need a set of spring compressors - asking for trouble (healthwise and bodywork-wise ) if you try to remove springs without 'em...

Halfords etc should have them...

My mate who restores / builds Spitfires / Triumphs has all the gear and will help we do the job - now all I've got to do is find the 260 quid for springs and alignment !

Will a couple of big vices do the job? Sorry I am not sure about how to call the tools used to keep wood together when you glue.

Which is more or less the force required to compress the spring? I am just scared about hurting myself doing the job.

Also, any suggestion about lowering spring brand? Eibach, H&R, Prodrive?

don't even think about trying to use a vice or sash clamps there's some serious energy stored in compressed car springs which you won't stop with your hands if it slips...

proper spring compressors are effectively threaded bar with a square end on to get a spanner / ratchet / key on and have two claws that go round the wire of the spring:-



these are a basic set and there's many variations on the theme but give you an idea
