Question P1 suspension help

Hi All,

I am sure its been spoken about a million times but I just can't find what I am looking for.
What is the correct procedure for repacking the struts on the P1?

I have tried and still have a knock! is it possible to still get the P1 genuine struts? tried looking about and am at a loss!

I am doing a big strip down this winter so look out for pictures of that.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Yes, you can buy them from a Subaru dealer. They are the red/pink coloured damper used on the V5/6 STi's

Not to be confused with the cheaper/not as good aftermarket ones available from Camskill etc

I sorted the p1 struts I have for my early type r.

Stripped the damper from the leg, removed all old grease, added a grease nipple between the 2 bearings and packed with red and tacky grease. Once assembled, forced a little more grease in via the nipples.

You may want change the internal bump stops, as the originals were too long and too stiff.

You can't buy a brand new 'P1' damper for £70 (with free delivery!) - someone's having a laugh

Plus, different part numbers, and that paint job is not OE

Front

Rear

I think they're £62.40 delivered.

http://pcadynamics.com/products/bump-stop-kits/

I'm sure Peter will be glad to help, as he designed the original P1 suspension - but bump stop technology has moved on.

No reason you couldn't use them on Bilsteins as well, the wr99's stops were too stiff and too short.

Part number checks out: 20311FA960 for the front left strut.

Imparts46 on eBay = International Motors. I bought a brand new Bilstein Prodrive damper from them this year for £70 posted. Note these are individual dampers which sporadically come onto the market - you can't buy a full set for this price.

I love a know it all thats pissed he spent nearly 4 x what others are paying now.

20311FA950 FA79 Strut Front RH
20311FA960(1) Strut Front LH
20360FA950 FA81 Strut Rear RH
20360FA960 FA82 Strut Rear RH

The 1 is the second phase of production!

And this International Motors on ebay is Subaru UK sell of old stock.

Now what should I spend the £491.20 I've saved on my 2 brand new front P1 struts???

Ha. Laugh all you like. No pissed here - I've been hooning around for four years on a brand new matched SET, not an odd ball new one off which will in-balance my car's handling

My puzzlement at a token gesture price has now been cleared - who wants ONE brand new 'old stock' damper - it's pretty much useless

Yeah, sure I remember you saying - they're great for the classic aren't they

Paying the dosh I did is a bit far out, but at the time I man mathed it by thinking equalling the damper spring combo would need going to say KW V3 or above which were at the time were £1600

It's sad really now that money represents almost half the value of these cars

Edit: meant to say I always prefer the classic with springs/dampers so didn't want to go coilovers

Ah right thanks you have been most helpful.

Spring not a good subject then? haha I take it the bump stops you recommend have been tried and tested and will give me a good balance?

As far as the original designer is concerned, if he was it doing again, those are the stops he'd use.
The originals were too long and too stiff. As previously mentioned, bump stop materials and design has moved on.
