Default Selling my JDM STI8, lots of potential but not perfect!

***Update - 04/01/2014. While I have had a lot of people "expressing interest", I haven't had a single person actually bother to come down to see the car.

Madam's house sale has almost completed and I want to put the money towards our new place together. I am not driving the car and it is taking up space on the drive. I have also had people wanting to part-ex, not after anything else really.

I am sending off the forms to put the original plate back on the car today and am dropping the price once only, fixed price, I will NOT take any offers below it at all.

£8000 - SOLD TO THE FIRST PERSON TO COME TO SEE HER

This does include the original bootlid and the torsion bars for it too as well as the bootlid on there currently.***

Hi guys.

I am selling my JDM STI8. This was one of two stupid purchases I made this year, both of which had a Subaru badge on them. Just to get this waffly bit out of the way:

1. I had 9 months of Chemotherapy this year, ending in August. While I coped extremely well physically, I suffered quite badly from "chemo brain". My judgement was impaired, I was only running about 50% of my mental capacity I reckon when it came to common sense and knowledge.

2. I came back in to all of this again by accident. A stranger contacted me regarding my old STI5 that I sold to someone in mint condition (had to sell to help out the ex, wasn't by choice!), in 2008, as it was back up for sale. Turns out that the guy took no care of it at all and knackered her. Heart took over what little brain I had and before I knew it I had bought my old STI5 back. I had arranged for Subaryu4You to look her over and fix her up but sadly/comically, my other half towed me the 40 miles to Newbury on a towing rod then got confused by the Satnav right by S4U, freaked out, slammed out the anchors and collected one STI5 up her backside.

3. With that car totalled and my dream crushed, I went a bit loopy and bought this STI8. I missed/chose to ignore/play down a load of what were obvious problems and bought the car. My own damn fault but my brain just wasn't working normally .

Since purchasing this car in early June, I have spent £9000 stupidly trying to fix this car up (I have the receipts!!) and make it more how I believe it should be, how it should drive and how it should look. While the difference is night and day compared to when I bought it, I still haven't gelled with the car at all. After having an Evo VII in 2009 which rattled me to death after Scoob number three, I bought a Jag XJR with every single option under the sun for a laugh. Utter luxury with bags of power. In late 2011 then got the RS6 and modded that lots to have bags of power as well as comfort while destroying almost everything else on the road.

Along with the Cupra R that I recently sold (big mistake selling that!) and having the modded S3 I think I am just spoiled as I find it very hard to enjoy how raw this STI feels in comparison. Despite me softening it up a fair bit, it is still a bit too harsh and unforgiving for me in my senior years (36 lol).

When I bought the car I missed a whole load of little things which on a normal noggin I would have picked up on but I didn't so I was lumped with this car to fix lol. I don't believe for a single second that the previous seller(s) had no knowledge of the various things I have found but there you go, buyer beware and all that .

You will come across people claiming this but I really am brutally honest with my car adverts. I don't cover things up, I say exactly what is what and to this day every single car I have ever owned has sold to the first person to come to see it and I have never had any complaints.

While I have fixed up an awful lot of the problems which I will go in to later, either through chequebook tuning or doing things myself, there are some bad points that are out of my control:

1. I am 99% sure that the car was hit at some point in its life on the left hand side. There is a slight difference in the thickness of the mica to my eyes and my Detailer agrees. I don't believe that it is my eyes, I am sure that the bootlid, be it the Ducktail or the OE lid, sits to one side rather than directly in the middle and this further confirms my theory. I am good friends with my tyre/alignment guy due to the amount of business I give him and from his checks and Subaru4You, everything points in the right direction chassis-wise! - EDIT! See one of my below posts as I have had it up on ramps and inspected. No sign of boot floor damage that any of us could see under inspection lamps and it in fact looks like she has actually had a rear right quarter panel, not the left!!

Quoted from the previous seller in the thread linked at the beginning of this post
I would describe the bodywork as being good for a ten yearold car. In September of last year I had the front bumper, bonnet, roof, rearbumper sprayed at a bodyshop. I clean the car with meguiars, dodo juice and poorboysproducts. Particularly use Poorboys Black Hole to give it a deep shine.
2. The DCCD system has what I believe is a wiring gremlin in it. It is probably an easy enough fix to the right owner but I am not that owner. I don't have a great back and am 6'7" so bending over playing with the cabling was killing me. The DCCD was working perfectly to my knowledge from driving the car before the clutch was changed but developed an intermittent error immediately after. I took it back but they couldn't figure out/see a problem . Saying that though I don't think they specialise in DCCD imo and I don't think the took the box out again to inspect.

Some days the DCCD works perfectly for the entire trip, other days it flashes up error mode almost immediately. This can normally be rectified by turning the car off and back on again while driving if it bothers you but it doesn't stop the car from driving when it does pop up error mode. When it works normally is swaps between auto and manual control exactly as expected. I reckon someone with the time and the patience to take the box out themselves would find the reason pretty quickly.

3. The engine. While it is fully functional at present and both Subaru4You and JGM have been involved with it since I bought it, I reckon it will benefit hugely from a rebuild/toughening down the road. It starts up perfectly every time, goes very well, but I just don't get that bombproof feeling that I get from my other cars. If I were buying this I would be planning on giving it a full strip down and beefing up as I think it deserves that! Toughening it will of course allow for more power

4. To me, when turning in to tight bends, T junctions or in to roads for example, the backend almost seems to skip the wheel(s) a little bit as if turning noticeably more than the front. However, a lot of people on here say that is actually normal.

5. On the rear right pillar trim, somehow a previous owner trapped something between that and the door when shutting it and dented the trim. At over £300 per trim, not even I am that stupid as to buy new. I actually have a pair of second hand trims from MattyB off here but they look to be a bit of a pig to fit so I have left them for the next owner to choose to fit!

6. Due to how **** poorly either a previous owner or installer fitted the FMIC, I found that the foglight cover trims kept popping out at the front and even after Subaru4You fitted the FMIC properly/improved the back bumper cutting etc still they did it, so I asked S4U to lightly bond the foglight covers in place. If needed you could remove the front bumper and cut out the bonding.

7. When the front passenger window is towards fully down it clangs around a bit on bumps etc. I have new stabilizer guides that I bought for the STI5 that look like they fit but haven't fitted them yet, I don't know if this will fix the niggle.

8. With the AlcaTEK, it has a feature where as you are rolling to a stop it keeps the revs slightly up, around 1500rpm if memory serves and then drops to normal idle within about a second of you coming to a stop. Pretty sure that the Idle Control Valve is a little sticky and needs to be taken off the inlet manifold and cleaned out with Brake/MAF cleaner etc. Sometimes the revs will sit at the higher AlcaTEK setting when you come to a stop is all. I got as far as having all the cleaning stuff on the kitchen worktop to do it but never drive the car so didn't get around to it.

9. The BC BR Coilover setup. I know people on here like them but to me,they aren't great imo, on this car at least. I believe that I have the "reference" springs on this kit and either it is fairly bone jarring when dialled in to say 8 on the front/6 on the rear or a little bouncy and set at 1 all round. People have driven the car and say that is how they are supposed to feel, oh well then, not my cup of tea. They also sound a little crashy to me at the rear (common apparently) as in when going up and down speed humps for example but again, was told they sound/feel exactly like they should.

That is all I can think of for the bad points but wanted those out so I don't get anyone turning up and trying to screw me over as it would annoy me intensely.

On to the good points/what I have done to the car:

1. The paddle clutch that was installed was a piece of junk. Not daily drive friendly at all, very heavy and on/off, that was pretty well it! Did my research and along with recommendations on here I had an ACT 515ftlbs uprated clutch fitted and the paddle one thrown in the skip! Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better, far more like a standard clutch, much lighter engagement, so much so that the other half can actually drive the car!

2. I had Subaru4You pick the car apart mechanically and including a full replacement cambelt kit to replace the poorly done previous kit (search through my posts on here, it is all there for you to see) full service of course, the clutch, JGM's time and a load of other bits, over £4250 alone of the 9k I have put in to this car since purchase was spent at S4U on getting her as up to scratch as possible.

I am pretty sure JGM has downtuned the engine to be as reliable as possible with the power it was running. Again, see point 3 on the bad list above as I still think the engine should be beefed up internally regardless of everything that has been done.

3. The stupid stretched/cambered "stance yo!" wheels were yanked off and replaced with a set of Rota Gforce rims along with new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 rubber via Mags at Ruislip Tyres. I decided that I didn't like the colour I chose for the rims so had Platinum Wheel Refurb (ex-Lepsons) in Swindon redo them in a much meaner finish.

4. The suspension was raised by S4U as despite the previous seller stating that there were no rubbing issues, there were, A LOT lol. To add to this, the damn car couldn't even make it over a speed hump without leaving half the exhaust scraped across it, not a problem any more and even the front lip somehow clears them too.

5. The Mcgard nuts and whatever else were fitted were pretty grotty so I splashed out on the expensive STI Spline Drive nuts all round and at the same time I swapped out the 5mm spacers the previous owner had fitted to the rear hubs, measured the stud lengths front/rear and then went with 3MM spacers to get a better-matched front/rear axle width due to the thicker bells on the AP discs at the front.

6. The boot area was an absolute state. It was leaking like a sieve and had a couple of inches of water in the wheel well when I went to see it! There was surface rust on parts of the boot floor, wheel well and under the hinges where the seal was shot to hell. I spent what must have been about 3 days in total bringing the boot area back to scratch and more.

All surface rust was removed, cured, sprayed back to black. The old boot seal was removed, the lip cleaned and treated/painted where necessary, a new seal applied with Carafax IDL99 inside the seal seam to waterproof the seal even better. The noise from the exhaust system (Blitz, then the H&S and finally the Milltek) had been annoying me a lot so I decked out the entire boot and wings in Dynamat Extreme, no skimping.

The boot trims were in a total state too but as they were very lightweight, I actually bonded them to a much better pair of trims, effectively double skinning the boot trim. Finally, the wheel well cover was warped/buggered so I got hold of the best condition one that I could find. As you know they don't support a fart so with that in mind, I obtained a 2mm thick sheet of Alu, cut it to shape and riveted it to the OE cover. The end result is a cover that is as tough as old boots, stays in place, won't warp for the hell of it and can take some weight on it!

7. The blue carpet was pretty tired so I got hold of the Hawkeye Spec D black carpet and fitted that in. Much nicer! New mats purchased at the same time for maximum effect.

8. Apart from the bit stuck behind the gauges in the pod, I removed all that awful stick on fake carbon tat. At the same time I put in a far better Hawkeye gearknob and a replacement OE handbrake lever to replace the sliced up silver metal thing that was there. For good measure I bought a JDM red hazard switch too.

9. The OE HID headlights were hazing over pretty badly and was yellowing badly on the passenger side. In the end I forked out for 1.5 sets of lights in order to get a set with lens covers that were up to the condition I wanted. Tubbs off here very kindly reworked the OE headlights, blacking them and swapping over the covers from the set I was happy with. The end result speaks for itself in the pictures!

At the same time I did my research on the strongest/best full beam bulbs to go in along side the HID setup and sidelights. I also swapped the OE white wing indicators for some lightly smoked ones. Silver indicator bulbs have been used all round.

10. The car had the usual bastadized £1.50 foglight switch in the dash which looked awful and connected to a nasty looking light hanging down from the back bumper. It was full of water and sludge, rusted through and dangerous! I took that straight off the car and brought the wiring in to under the right rear light cluster where it has been cable tied back ready to do the rear cluster foglight mod. I got hold of a proper OE foglight switch for the dash and installed that, it is ready to go, just do the rear mod!

11. The OE rear bootlid was looking tired and also looked like it was starting to rust under the spoiler for good measure..... I got hold of a Do-Luck "Ducktail" clone bootlid from Carben Fibre Creations. After getting the bootlid professionally smoothed and painted by my Fibreglass painting experts at PhirmFX (Ex-TVR bodyshop guys), I was £775 poorer for this alone! The keylock didn't fit so after about 45 mins of very delicate dremeling I had that sorted.

Due to the bootlid weighing nothing, the torsion bars had to be removed, I still have them somewhere along with the OE bootlid. Due to this the bootlid doesn't stay open by itself, you either have to hold it open or you can do the magnet mod in the hinge arms. I have well over 100 hard drives here so was going to do that mod but hadn't got to it yet.

12. I am not a fan of sticking the Defi controll units all over the place in the centre console and I don't need to be constantly pressing buttons on it so with that in mind, I relocated it to where I normally have it in scoobs, the glovebox. You can still reach it if needed and it looks a hell of a lot tidier.

13. The radio was pants and wasn't wired in properly either to the point where even the radio amplifier had been missed. I fixed this of course and at the same time I brought my old JVC KX-AVX800 head unit back from the dead with a brand new touchscreen/lcd panel. This was installed along with the KTA-BT200 Bluetooth Addon unit.

I also purchased a second hand JVC KT-DB1000 DAB Addon unit and tested it wired in to the stereo while holding the antenna outside the car. I fully intended to actually fit a dedicated roof mount antenna at the rear of the roof but hadn't got around to it yet. Will provide the DAB Addon too as it is matched to this head unit and may be of use to the buyer.

14. After all the work had been done to the car and the suspension had settled I had it fully aligned by Merrow Tyres in Farnham. I am friends with the boss through coming to him for years and he personally does all my car alignments. He does a lot of Imprezas and dialled it in nicely, far better than the retarded stanced camber fatboy stretched wheel setup it was running. Not saying that it will be up to say a Powerstation alignment but it is far better then when I bought it.

15. The STI8 steering wheel is hideous. Based on a thread on here I removed the centre, cleaned it up, primed and sprayed it satin black. End result is much nicer! I actually caved in and bought a really good Hawkeye steering wheel but haven't fitted it yet, will be included in the sale for the buyer to fit or sell.

16. The rear wiper pump packed up so S4U sourced a replacement assembly and fitted that. The rear parcel shelf was tatty as hell and rare as hell but luckily I managed to source one from another forum member. I removed all the sound deadening from the shot one and doubled up on the better one.

17. Clips, clips, clips and clips! I lost track of how many different clips were missing/mangled in this car and I doubt I came close to replacing them all. Saying that, I am now on very friendly terms with the Local Subaru Parts guy!

18. I had bought a HDI FMIC and went to a lot of trouble getting it professionally anodized black to replace the hideous silver FMIC on the car but S4U insisted that the hassle of fitting it outweighed any reason for swapping it. I asked them to remove the current FMIC and paint it black so that the front of the car didn't look nasty any more. Job done. I also bought a Zunsport black mesh grille but haven't fitted it yet.

19. While the car was having the bulk of its work by S4U I had the FAKE HKS BOV binned and as they couldn't obtain a recirc adaptor for me, had a Turbosmart Vee Port Pro installed. Yes, still a chav valve but it isn't that bad in all honesty and occasionally makes me smile I have to admit .

20. I sent the ECU off to AlcaTEK to upgrade it from the old SimTEK code and get all the little extra tweaks. While the ECU was out I did a load of wire tidying around the loom where the antilag/launch control wiring had been put in. I extended the cables where necessary to give a better fit, soldered accordingly and at the same time I removed the stick out silver flip switch thing that everyone seems to get put in for the AL/LC and put in a far more discreet switch from Maplin.

21. The Blitz Nur Spec R/3" decat setup was bloody awful. I had done that exact setup when I was a lot younger but Jesus, it was just unbearable. I had a pounding headache after just 30 mins driving the car. Based on prior experience with Hayward & Scott, I ordered a system from them. Hated the noise from that personally, sounded like a raspy angry bee to me.

I had originally wanted a Milltek full system with matched downpipe but they make them in batches due to the rarity of the Twinscroll setup on these and wouldn't have one ready in time for all the work. I went back to them and bought a new system before the car went in for its second set of work at S4U. Muuuuuuuch better. Great sound that isn't overpowering on idle at all and barks nicely when going for it.

I am sure there are various other things but I am losing the will to live writing this ad and really must get on with some work.

There is a fair bit of history from the car over the last few years and I have doubled the size of the file just since June!

Again, as I always am, I have been totally honest with this car advert. I shouldn't have bought the car as I wasn't in a good mental state at the time from the Chemotherapy drugs. I shouldn't have spent the same amount again on trying to make it something it isn't, it just can't compare to what I am used to driving now. I have done my damndest with this car and really feel that I am giving someone a good platform to go the last mile with it.

I am 36, have never owned my own house and have pissed away most of my money on gadgets and cars over the years. Since finishing Chemo in Mid-August we finally managed to sell the other half's shoebox and are currently house-hunting. We are right on the cusp of the next jump up the Stamp Duty rates and selling this will just about give us what we need to cover that instead of of staying lower down the price range with the house.

I work from home and hardly drive. When I do, I take one of the other cars as I am spoiled. The lazy auto box in the 6 combined with all the torque you could want has me getting in to that car 9 times out of 10!

THE NUMBERPLATE DOES NOT COME WITH THE CAR! Unless I get interest quickly in the car I will be putting the plate on retention and putting the original plate back on. That plate has a lot of sentimental value for me so I wouldn't part with it for anything less than a fair chunk of change on top of the sale price of the car!

My price is final. I am not accepting tyre kickers, chavs, test pilots coming along, pleading poverty and lowballing me. I have taken a bath on this car which is my fault and choice, but I am not bending over further on it . If you chose to sell certain things from the car you could easily get 4 figures back so bear that in mind if you are thinking about penny pinching .

Pics, dontt forget, the (slightly tatty IMO) original bootlid/spoiler are included in the sale:

Sorry for no engine bay shots but I totally forgot before putting the car back on the drive and putting the cover over her. The engine bay looks pretty well exactly as in the thread link at the top, bar the Fuelab FPR, some slightly tidied cabling and a different BOV!

Links to included odds & sods:

What an absolute fecking shame it's come to you having to sell the car Nick. I followed all your threads about the ups and downs you were having with the car and know full well the amount of money you sunk in to the car. It pains me to see you selling the car for an amount which barely covers what you've spent on it.
I wish you the best of luck with the sale (you won't need it). To anyone interested in the car all I'll say is Nick has spent an eye watering amount getting this car up to the standard it is. No expense has been spared and he has taken advice from forum members on the upgrades/changes. It is a lot of car for the money and lot of performance for cost.

That's one hell of a comprehensive for sale ad, never seen it around and I'm just down the road. Like it a lot but the type r woul d have to go and unless stuff is dirty cheap it doesn't seem to sell quick

Thanks guys. That is how I do all my ads! Better to have too much information rather then too little as I am happy with what I am selling someone and the buyer is armed with as much information as possible, leaving them with less to remember to look out for/miss when coming to see the car.

Chrispy, working from home means I have put no miles on the car since June really and I only go in to Aldershot normally to go food shopping/to the anodizers/to TFS.

Einstein, thanks for that. At the end of the day I was a muppet as I had no need to buy another car, let elone make it my mission to fix it up/make it far more of an all round daily driver/point to point capable beast. I have a stupidly understanding other half that just let me do what I wanted to do, especially after she made the booboo when towing the first one .

It kept my brain busy if nothing else so not the end of the world really. I have had that numberplate since my first Scoob so if I keep the plate there is hope that I may one day get another one for the hell of it, but that purchase will be made on a far more level head!

There is one other reason for selling this car. I have first dibs on my friends 800bhp V10 RS6 this time next year and I figure I can sit on my hands and control the urge to buy another car until that one comes up

Great advert mate!! plenty of pics, info and generally a good honest advert!!

I made a offer for this car when the previous owner had it, does look a nice car, and you have spent some money fixing it and making it better!!

Good luck with your next purchase!!

My car does the same as your problem No4, it usually happens when the DCCD is set in auto, I usually leave my DCCD open and the switch all the way back, car drives much better, only problem is when I forget its open and the roads are damp, it can get a bit tail happy!!!

4. To me, when turning in to tight bends, T junctions or in to roads for example, the backend almost seems to skip the wheel(s) a little bit as if turning noticeably more than the front. However, a lot of people on here say that is actually normal.

Firstly glad to hear you coped well with the therapy and hope is all good for you now! I must say that is an amazing add and with that amount of detail stating all the good bits and the bad I don't think anyone can really nitpick if they come view it. Hope this sells very soon for you, don't see why it shouldn't be a fab Xmas present

Good luck Greg

Just so you guys know, this ad isn't a fluke, here is the one from my last Impreza

https://www.scoobynet.com/private-fo...63k-miles.html

The ad for the Cupra recently, that was off my drive less than 24 hours after putting the ad up, was pretty well the same, as was the one for the Jag .

For me, it is better to have it all out there for everyone to see and go from there. If the car is nothing but great then that is what I say, if there are problems then that is what I say. It is just best for everyone and it is a shame that it is rare for me to come across someone doing the same when I buy a car but there you go.

The Pistonheads ad I put up points to here and I have encouraged people to look me up and search through my posts etc.

Hoping for some extra special bonus sexy time from Madam when I see her for doing this!

Beautiful car.

I recognise the reg - I bought your old V2 STi back in 2005ish!

I can confirm that the ad was like this when I bought the V2 from Nick. Great seller!

I think you used to call the V2 'Rolling Thunder'!

Good luck with your sale!

Nick.

Any chance you can add a bit more detail?

Don't often comment on for sale ads, but this is a beauty, exactly as it should be done. Good luck, car looks stunning btw.

Oh and your point 4 about the skipping feeling on a tight corner... my old 2003STI that I owned from new felt exactly the same! Nature of the beast I think!

Can't believe this hasn't sold yet! If I had 9k id bite nicks arm off. Also wouldn't be bumping it to the top if I thought I had a chance at getting the funds. All the ops hard work for somebody to just give it finishing touches. Glws Marc

Right, partly due to Tubbs' rightful concern about me saying I think the car was crashed and due to me volunteering, I have just spent almost 2 hours freezing my nards off in an industrial estate car park waiting for alignment guy to clear his backlog of clients so I could get the car up on the hydraulic ramps.

Between four of us (Boss man there and the two other employees) we couldn't see any sign of damage/replacement of the boot floor but I will say now, there is an awful lot of stuff bolted on down there to interfere with the view! Regardless, with a bright inspections lamps on they said they don't think anything structural had happened to the backend/boot floor.

I opened the boot and pointed to where I though a new rear quarter panel had been put on possibly and they all agreed. Looks very much like she had a replacement rear RIGHT quarter, no sign of replacement on the left side.

So, there you have it, not as bad as I assumed it was. This is the same outfit that aligned her and found that everything was pointing in the right direction!

No doubt I am completely wrong but just relaying what was seen with all our eyes and what they have told me

Had the pleasure of seeing this car today whilst collecting some parts from Nick and I have to say it is stunning, It is nice to see another car that is kept in the kind of condition that I expect from these cars. Nice to meet you today and hope the right buyer comes along for the car

wow just goes to show you really cant tell what you're buying... you say you blame the meds for imparing your judgement, but I think you're being a bit tough on yourself.

There seemed to have been an enormous amount of problems with the car, you couldn't have known about them all when buying even being in the best frame of mind.

The attention to detail making it perfect is admirable though, my hat is off to your sir!

GLWTS!

I may also add to your concern about the possible damage, you mentioned about your boot not lining up correctly. Just to point out remember although it is a top quality part it may not fit absolutely 100% due to the fact it is an aftermarket item, so I wouldn't base your opinion on the boot spacing. Im sure if you fitted the OE one it would probably line up well.

Anyhow, very nice car and you've had to put a fair bit it of love, care and attention into her! Good luck with sale.

You are right, the fit of the Do-Luck clone bootlid is not as good as the OE bootlid IMO and I still have the original bootlid included in the sale.

Bump. While I have had a lot of people "expressing interest", I haven't had a single person actually bother to come down to see the car.

Madam's house sale has almost completed and I want to put the money towards our new place together. I am not driving the car and it is taking up space on the drive.

I am sending off the forms to put the original plate back on the car today and am dropping the price once only, fixed price, I will NOT take any offers below it at all.

£8000

This does include the original bootlid and the torsion bars for it too as well as the bootlid on there currently.
