Question Rear lights - how much sealant?

Hi all

Looking to swap over to my STI classic rear lights soon but am curious as to how much sealant to apply? The groove in the lights is quite wide, perhaps someone has a photo of the required amount of sealant applied before installation?

Thanks!

Put on what you think you will need, then double it

no blobs, sealant all the way around to the point that when you push in the lights, it overflows. That is the only way to guarantee it wont leak. I went through two tubes of the crappy halfords stuff before discovering tiger seal in the big tubes

Isn't tiger seal an adhesive though?

It is both, an adhesive and sealant
You can still take out the lights at a later date using the hairdryer trick. If in doubt just use some plain old black waterproof sealant

The proper stuff to use is Carafax grey, available from caravan dealers and some Halfords.

It is a non-setting mastic used to weatherproof fittings on caravans. When I replaced my lights, I put a 1cm thick bead all around and it hasn't leaked since. DO remove all the old stuff though, scrape and white spirit.

The beauty of it is that, should you NEED to remove the light unit, it WILL come out with a firm pull. If you use Tiger seal, or heaven forbid, silicone, you'll be at it forever.

do NOT use tigerseal, if in the future you crack the light how will you replace it? you need something strong but not permanent

Exactly. I've searched on here before and seen the comments on non-drying bedding sealant for caravans, but it only seems to come in white or cream/grey. I looked hard for some black stuff but couldn't find any.

I spoke to two different Subaru dealers and neither supply anything and both recommended just using silicone

Carafax: I've used the grey, you can't see it once the lights are back in place anyway
