800 wet n dry, wet sand it till its very very dull, then wet sand it in 1200 gritt, then prime, wet sand again in 1200, another prime, wet sand, then wash and dry off, light coats of base coat drying in between till you build up good coverage, leave to set in heat for 24 hours, 1200 wet sand to dull it but becareful not togo thru colour coat, then clear coat it
heat the cans before hand as it charges the paint in the can so it sprays finer.

To be honest if you don't know how to prep a car for paint you sure as hell shouldn't be painting it, as for heating the cans before you spray its not a push bike mate, you need a professional spray gun with a compressor capable of feeding atlest 40lb of pressure
Leave it to the professionals buddy

It really depends on what you are painting the car for, is it for a colour change? Rust? dents? stone chips? Because they will all need prepping in different ways. Also what colour is the car (or is the car going to be)? Darker colours are easier to prep than silver cars, which need to be very carefully prepped. Any bad prepping on a silver car will show up in the basecoat like a turd in the frost.
And don't use aerosols. As scooby jib says you need a compressor that can supply 2bar (or over) for a sustained length of time if its going to be a repaint. Hope this help

I really can't believe scooby sep would even think about using spray cans on a full respray, it would look horrid, streaky and you can't get a shine on aerosol.
ive been painting for two years now, yes ok bodyshops are expensive but you get what you pay for, i fully resprayed my scoob only last week,
Prepping is 95% of a respray, if you have crap pred work its gonna look twice as bad when sprayed.
Sorry for getting abit mouthy but that made me mad with rage
