If all the bits u r paintin are bare plastic with no primer on them the tou will beed to get some plastic primer as the paint won't stick to it it will fall off.
Heres what we do at my work (a Body Shop)
1-First makesure they are clean, paint don't stick to dirt
2-You will need to rub them down lightly with a scotch brite, you don't want too score it too much this just gives the primer something to get hold off
3-Apply a light coat of plastic primer (not too heavy as it will take ages to dry and some primers can be quite aggressive to plasics and can craze up) If its a high build primer apply a few cots and then leave it to dry
4-Once its dry rub it down lightly with the scotch brite or some fine wet n dry sandin paper (Halfords will do it) If u want to get rid of the textured affect from the handles you will need to do this step afew times.
5- Once its how u want it add a light coat of colour (a Gripp coat, put it on too heavy and u will find it will be morelikely to pick off easy) the next coat go a little heavyer then carry on till its covered. Leave it to dry for as long as it says on the tin.
6-Then just add a few coats of clear laquer leave it to dry then its done
Don't rush it and it should look puckker Just make sure its clean then you won't get any **** in it
Hope this helps any more questions just ask mate

Don't think halfords can mix up your colour no they will sell the colour u need but it won't be a spot on match? I think if you can find a Paint supplier that supplies it to body shops some can mix it up and put it in a spray can?
At my body shop we use 'AR Davies motor factors' in baldock hertfordshire for out paint
