Law on window tinting ?
#1
On the news the other day they said 70% of light must be able to penetrate through to the inside of the car.
The coppers are now being issued with light meters so they can now check cars with tints,up until now they weren't able to.

Does anybody know how the law stands on window tinting, got pulled and told that I was not allowed any tint on front windows, so was wondering what the max allowed was before having them re-done.
Apparently in North Wales they have been inpounding cars with dark windows !!

Nothing allowed on the windscreen ( a top tint is only OK if the wiper don't pass over it)
For the front side windows the max allowed is a 35% tint.
I had the front sides done on my JDM STi 7, as the rears are all tinted from Japan. They said the rear were a 10% Limo tint. But this would be illegal on the fronts and 35% was the limit.
What the % figures measure, I'm not sure.

I had mine done not so long ago, the back had already been done from the factory - but I had 35% at the front.
The guy said that although the law wasn't set in stone, 35% would be the right side of it for the front. The back has to let in some light though - I think it's 10-15%, as he said the 95% ones are illegal, you have to sign a disclaimer in some places (I've heard), if you want anything other than the limit they advise!

Motor vehicles first used between 1/6/1978 and 31/3/1985 must have windows which allow at least 70% of light to pass through. Motor vehicles first used on or after 1/4/1985 must have windscreens which allow at least 75% of light to pass through - all other windows must admit at least 70% of light.

Reading all your replies, does anyone know what differences exist for imported cars. My dealer told me, that on factory fit imported cars, the front side windows may be tinted, but local "plod" is stopping cars to have the tints "Removed!" - they haven't stopped me yet(too fast for them I think - hehe!)

anything like the rest of the country local plod has not really got a clue.
A friend of mine is a copper and when I asked him he had no idea.
However, I did hear the other day about a motorist with limo black all round who had his car impounded by the plod on one of our fair motorways and he had to get the AA to take his car home on the back of a truck.
