Question

Just ordered an STi front lip from my friendly local Subaru dealer for my MY00 UK Turbo (not sure if it's STi5 or STi6 or whatever).

Cost £94.84 + VAT

I asked if there was a fitting kit available for it (might as well do it properly) and was told I need the following:-

2 bumper clips 66p each
9 screws 13p each
9 screw grommets 38p each
plus a "Protector Under Spoiler" at £13.78

Anyone have any idea what the last item is and whether or not I need it?? It looked like some sort of gasket on the crappy "exploded car" diagram they showed me. I've ordered it anyway but I'm guessing that when it all arrives there'll be no instructions!!

Any ideas???

Steve

Don't know about the last item, but there should be holes in the bottom of the bumper that the screw gromets push into them you mount the lip and screw through it into the gromets
The bumper clips I asume go in the wheel arch!

I helped a mate fit one the other week. It took about 10mins and that included cleaning the bumper before fitting the lip

Don't remember the "Protector Under Spoiler" though!!!!

I think the protector thingy, is the black platic strip that sits between the bumper and the splitter:

Andy, you're absolutely right! I've just been to pick it up and for my £16+ worth of "protector under spoiler" I have received a piece of black rubber about 2 foot long and 1/4 inch wide!!!

Still, it came neatly rolled up in a nice little box !!!!!!!!!!

BARGAIN

Cheers Guys

The strip stops the splitter scratching your front bumper when you're reaching take-off speed

when you're going fast, the splitter is forced down by the air pressure, and the rubber stops the scratching.

So I've been told (thanks P20SPD )

I got a box with 2 x rubber "under spoiler" things in it. I assume they line along the bottom of the space where the radiator aperture / front splitter meet. Now I thought I'd only get one. Do I need 2, or is the second one as backup? or am I totally missing the point, and should they connect somewhere else?

Thanks in advance.

I only got one - it's about 2 foot long (about the length of the aperture to the radiator!!)

Are both of yours about 2 foot long? Or have you got 2 that are 1 foot long??

I'm sure if BuRR doesn't need one, it'll appear in For Sale shortly.

'costs £16 from a Subaru Dealer, yours for only £10+P&P'

I've got 2 x 2 foot long strips of rubber. The box actually says "contents : 2" on the side.

I think I'll be keeping it - as sod's law would say that I lose mine as soon as I sell it.

Question

Burr,

Did you use the Subaru screws etc that I listed above? If so, how did you go about fitting it??

Did you drill holes in the underside of your bumper and "snap" the little white grommets into the holes then screw through the splitter and into the bumper from underneath??

Or did you drill through the bumper and place the little grommet things on top of the bumper then screw through splitter and bumper??

I had a look last night but was unsure which method to use.

What year is yours? Mine's MY00 and doesn't have any holes already in the bumper. Bugger.

Just been and had another look at my bumper - definitely no holes for the clips to push into.

Had a look at the bumper on an X-reg Sport Special parked nearby - that has holes!

I wonder if mine has had the front bumper replaced at some point with an aftermarket one???

Looks like I'll be getting the drill out and then trying to file the holes square!! Oh dear - I sense a major disaster is afoot

Well it's on - and it doesn't look too bad!!!

I never bothered drilling holes in the bumper and squaring them off - too much effort. I clipped the splitter on, drilled pilot holes through the bumper from underneath, placed the little grommet things on top of the underside of the bumper and screwed the screws right through. Seems solid enough!

My bumper already had the holes there. No drilling required.

I just bought some heavy duty threaded bolts, and some of those small flanges that act as a nut when the screw threads into it.

not sure the uk impreza will have the holes as it was only the sti that had the splitter on, the jap bumpers dont have the holes cut for the washer jets, so they do make 2 different bumpers one for the jap imports and one for the UK. I bought one from TEG in Carnforth and that had been shipped in from japan and this as got the holes.

Mine's a green 5 door, and we all know that green was a UK only colour..... Mine has the holes.

Maybe its a MY99 thing? As they were the first with the facelifted front bumper?

green is not actually a uk colour as there was some early WRX imports seen a few knocking about. most of the green wrx seem to be automatics aswell.

Not sure what you're on about but green is a UK colour and UK MY99-00 bumpers have the square holes cut in which take the grommets for attaching an Sti6 front spoiler. MY98 and earlier will probably not have.

Scooby New, How much did it cost you for the painting? and is it the same splitter as in Andy Tang's photo?

Cheers

Steve.
