I'm thinking of getting a private plate for the car (WRX probably) and currently have a square plate on the front. Since the private plate will have less numbers I'd like to make the front one as small as poss without being "too" illegal - i.e. use slightly smaller letters and have the plate cut just big enough for the letters to fit.
Has anyone done this, and if so did you get any hassle off the police? How much smaller can you make the letters before it becomes obvious that it's not a legit plate? I'm going to have the back plate full-size with standard lettering.
Any pics would be great.

I got it from http://www.gtgrafix.co.uk. can't remeber the size, but the letters are actually legal size, it's just the plate that is smaller.
I've ad it on since christmas and had no bother yet except at MOT time

Cheers mate, looks good with the smaller plate. I reckon round these parts I'm more likely to get away with slightly reduced font size than having no gap like you have done. I've been pulled before for incorrect spacing on my other car which has a private plate.
Trying to work out the best balance between the "legal" size and one that looks good!

My front one is smaller 360 x 80 mm. Lettering is only just illegal. Have had a few comments from police but never had wrists slapped. As long as you keep the font normal and the spacing ok then you should be ok. imho

I have this one, it/s done with bike letters.
I also have this one...
Now take a look at you space bar... That's what my mate made me when i told him to make me one "as small as he could". Needless to say it'll never be used on the car, although it may make a nice keyring.

mine is /was 395 x 50 . once you pay the fine they give you the plate back and another piece of information seems to be that i only get stopped at night with it .got away with it for months just using the car through the day but when i started to take it to work when i was on lates i got nailed within 2 days on both occations .
they claim to be cracking down on plates in the area but i think they could spend there time better by nailing all the boy racers and the b'stards who try and steal the imprezas .
what motor you got mate ? mine was t573ase and is now s300byt.green 4dr

Thanks for the replies guys, and the offer Iain but I've since got a set from fancyplates.com and I'm well happy with them. Made exactly to my requirements, the front plate is actually narrower than my current plate which is a square plate!
Just got to wait for the paperwork to be transferred by the DVLA so I can fit them. Will post up some pics when I get the plates on the car.

Excellent plates but all highly illegal. Ive been stopped and measured with a tape measure. If they aint the right shape, size, font etc they throw the book at ya .....It just aint worth it.
