what makes a number plate illegal?

Absolutely everything that doesn't match the spec above !
1. Colour of plate
2. Pattern of plate
3. Imaging of plate
4. Font on plate
5. Spacing on plate
6. Size of plate
7. Screw head / letter manipulation
8. Position of plate (?)
I'm totally baffled that some people on here can get away with 'adjusted' spacing and letters to make words up. I got stopped for one letter being moved 1.5 cms too far one way !
