Erm I may be wrong as my clubs are gathering dust in the garage, but I was under the assumption that the numbers (usually 1-4) are so you can differentiate between yours and a competitors ball if you use the same brand i.e. mines a titleist 1 etc.

Oh and when I started off I just bought like 100 pinnacle lake ***** (***** reclaimed from lakes, water etc then cleaned and resold as seconds) for peanuts and they lasted me time (when losing a good 5-6 per round). Had a few crappy penfold commandos and they felt like they were made of lead.

Purely for differentiating between same brand ***** if playing with others, or looking for them in the rough like I normally do!
Its normally written on the ball what they are like in terms of soft/hard feel. Something that states "spin" or "balata" for instance means it usually is quite a soft feel and normally used by good golfers who have better control with it.
Ones labelled with "distance" are normally of harder compound and therefore go further.

If you're after cheap ***** - try playing at Shi... I mean Whitehaven. I went into a bush to look for one of my mates wayward drives and found 26 of them (none of them my mates...)
Also Crook nr Kendal, field next to first fairway...
"Is it this one?"
"No"
"Is it this one?"
"No" - resulting in another mass haul.

If you're starting get the cheapest ***** you can lay your hands on. Don't waste your money on decent ones as a) you'll end up loosing them b) they won't make any difference to your game
Maybe whoever told you about the numbering is getting confused with markings on other ***** e.g. squash
