1 It's great
2 Yes
3 Undoubtedly
4 Snowboard, boots, bindings, wristguards. Hire all of it when you get out there. Take waterproof trousers ("salopettes") and a ski coat/wind proof jacket. Lots of thin layers rather than chunky jumpers.
You should pick it up in a day or two. It's fairly eaasy. Definitely get lessons (not from a mate unless he is an instructor!), and hire wrist protectors or spend the rest of the week in pain. You will fall over. Lots. Your **** will recover but you always break the falls on your wrists.
Try and avoid button lifts, and make sure the resort has plenty of green and blue runs with chairlift access. Button lifts and snowboards and beginners do not mix
If it all goes Pete Tong, make sure the place you're hiring from can swap snowboard kit for a pair of skis with minimal/no cost. Alternatively, those stubby skis (2 foot long or so) are an absolute piece of cake to use (like ice skating, but with skis) and absolute cracking fun.
Enjoy!

Good luck! I would recommend learning out there. I tried learning at an outdoor slope (Bracknell) and an indoor slope (Milton Keynes)
Bracknell was a complete waste of time and money and Milton Keynes is better buy VERY expensive. Lessons when you get out there are a fraction of the price and you will get to know a bunch of people.
You should really enjoy it. I know I did when I went out to Canada for the first time last year. Of to Austria this year for New Years! Can't wait!
A good pair of gloves is essential. If you are looking to get some hardware before you go out I would recommend a good pair of boots. Can recommend Burton or Vans. Not sure about any other.
Have a great time. I am sure you will!

2 "snowboarding is hard to learn and easy to master"
"skiing is easy to learn and hard to master"
First day is very hard work and you will probably hate it, 2nd day it will get easier and on the third you will be doing blue/green runs easy and probably some reds but not with much style.
3 As above you will hate the first day but drown ou sorrows with some mountain lager!!!!
4 As stated by others.
Enjoy.

its so easy to do and i love it, i picked it up after a few hours, i learnt on a dry slope in the UK but as everyone has said its cheaper and easier to actually learn out there on the slopes.
