Default Skid Pan Day in Surrey

After the success of the last one I said that I would look into arranging another one early in 2005 below are a few pictures taken on the last skid pan day.

Cost wise we are probably looking at between £60-65 a person and we start at 9am with a briefing and then finish at about 2pm after a competition

Poor Terry he just couldn't face opening his eyes!

Also to add that there are only 6 spaces on this course as I already have 2 people confirmed, and already one possible.

I did the last one and it was great fun
I might even have learn't something

I would recommend this to anyone interested in driving.
You get to use both rear and front wheel drive cars and experience different handling characteristics.

Just to add to Ian's info:
It's in Croyden and the instructors are both Ex-police instructors. They are both very easy going and can have you doing the impossible in no time

Cheers Dyney and it is Croydon

At the end of the day there is a competition where last time we put £2 each into the pot, then the person who did the course in the fastest time got to take the pot!

Sounds like a laugh and a good day out - count me in (again, depending on the date - but I'm probably due a day off by now!)

Do we get to use our own cars at all? I'd love a play with DCCD on a skid pan

You wouldn't want to use your car on there!!!

Oil and water on your tyres on the way home

The cars they use are specially adapted They run almost slick tyres on the back and inflate them to about 50psi

No, it just means you don't have to go fast to get it to slide

You really don't want to go fast on the skid pan!! It is very slippery
Bleive me you will have enough trouble keeping control at 15 MPH

Andy trust me even just having driven my car over the train of oil/water left by the cars it certainly makes for an 'interesting' moment come the first bend!

You will use the skills that you gain on the road, it certainly is a very interesting experience if you have never done it before, learning the different charactaristics of FWD/RWD cars in skids, and also the difference that ABS makes and how to make the most of it.

You might only be doing between 15 - 20 MPH in the car but you can induce a skid VERY easily because of a combination of the tyres, the pressures that they run, and the oil/water liquid that is down on the skid pan. the National Driving Centre is one of the few 'wet' skid pans in the UK that is avalible to the general public to attend, however this skid pan is also used by lots of other companies to ensure that their drivers are tained to the best standards possible. As an example on the last time that we were there a large supermarket chain had sent a couple of there drivers down for a days tuition on driving making them fully aware of everything, and this day finished for them with a session on the skid pan.

Once i have the numbers confirmed at 8 then I will arrange a date thats convenient to all.

1) Reserved
2) Reserved
3) Reserved (possibly need to confirm this one though)
4) Phil Stephens
5) AndyC_772

Need 3 more possibly a 4th tehn I can arrange a date that suits everyone. We need an even number because what you do is 'pair' up in the cars, and when you are a passenger in the back you get to learn from the experiences that the driver is having.

Just think how useful the knowledge that you gain on a day like this would come in with weather conditions like this!

Be there, seen it and done it

Got too say that a few hours on a skid pan WILL help you with your day to day driving.

Do they have different cars you use? I tried front wheel and rear wheel drive cars. Plus one with ABS which can be switched on and off. That was fun

Thought that you might have

Yup there is a FWD Nissan Primera, which the ABS can be disabled on, and there is also a RWD Ford Sierra.

Julie as long as she has a full licence then she would be fine to take part. I am sure that it wold be very beneficial for her actually as a relativly new driver.
