Default 2002 WRX - why do I have a fob and a key with buttons?

Maybe a silly question but my fob decided to snap off my key ring earlier so have been browsing online for replacements. Now my friends blob doesn't use the extra key fob that I have , just the buttons within the key (I have a keypad inside the cabin & he doesn't which I think could explain a different alarm ?)

My question is why do I have both and not just a key like on a blob ?

Can I upgrade to the key only solution ?

Picture of my key and fob below

dont think the key ever did anything , its just a standard subaru key. And the fobs always break , try this . . .

I think the buttons on the key do work if there is a battery in it, it's to do with the sigma alarm/imob why you need the fob, might be wrong though

My key has never worked, confusing as my mates works off the key.

I will drill it like the above when I get some ***** - i think I may get a replacement one first just in case . Is second hand my only option ?

I think there's new ones on eBay but they ain't cheap, I think drilling it's a great idea I would cut the leftover off though so its rounded

The alarms were an aftermarket fit by Subaru UK as the cars from Subaru Japan had no alarms fitted hence why the alarm is not integrated into the key. You basically have A Sigma alarm retrofitted to the car you can get Sigma fobs (without the Subaru branding) for £20 or so new on eBay.

With later models the fob pcb was integrated into a single button key.

A good reference thread for most Sigma problems, questions/answers......

I may have a pin but i dont know it - is that a problem? i have a keypad.

Would this mean i could get rid of the fob and have a working key only?

Changing your PIN with a working fob:

- Arm and then Disarm the system using a working Radio fob.

- Within 30 seconds of disarming, type into the keypad: *17856*92*wxyz*wxyz# (where wxyz is your new PIN code)

- Arm the system with the Radio fob

- You should now be able to disarm the system using the new PIN code

Once again, always a good thread to look through.......
http://forums.sidc.co.uk/topic/96215...larm-problems/

Also has info on changing your 2 button key for a 1 button key and no fob.
