Default car alarm going nuts!

i think all this loverly august weather (!) has got to my car (MY02sti-uk).
after coming back from the shops i locked the car and went inside 3mins later the alarm goes off.
the alarm fob wont stop it (battery ok).
so i managed to disconnect the battery.
i gave it 30mins and reconnected it.
it seemed ok so i took it on a 10mile motorway drive to hopefully dry out the problem.

the drive was fine,so i went home and parked up and all seemed fine.

30mins later it started making some funny noises and setting the siron off again

ive had to leave the battery disconnected
has anyone experianced this and/or offer some advice

Siren checked and no water inside.
i replaced the 9v battery and its all systems go again.

so thanks for the direction.

one last question.

the 9v i removed was a rechargeable battery but i only had a normal battery.

will that be ok or should i fit a rechargeable one soon as poss.

thanks
