MY97 UK Turbo - 'blank' key bought off ebay starts car - immobiliser broken?
I bought a blank Subaru key off ebay recently to use as a spare, and got it cut at a local key cutters. They told me they couldn't reprogram it, which I knew anyway as I've been told they need to be sent off to Subaru.
However, when testing to see if the key had been cut properly before I sent it off to Subaru, I put it in the ignition, turned it, and it started the car!
This worries me. Is the immobiliser faulty, or will any blank key just 'work' without being reprogrammed?
The only other possibility I can think of is perhaps one of the previous owners swapped the ECU for a different model. Are there any other models (e.g. Jap import STi) ECU's that are a straight swap into a MY97 UK Impreza?

maybe the as you say the car has had a ecu change, or the owner secured the chip from a old key around the ignition barrel, in effect making the car un immobilised the best thing to do if have a look at your old key to see if there is a chip in it if not its one of the above..
