Default Cobra alarm knackered on late 2007 Forrester?

Had brand new STI Forrester for 18 months (it was new October 2007)
Then one day it just dies on me (it had rained the night before)- the fobs work as the lights are on, and the over-ride pin code is dead too
Its a Cobra Thatcham Cat 1
No point in me taking it 120 miles or so back to Tewkesbury for the guy who fitted it at Litchfields place to see whats up with it so I take it to a local Cobra specialist

Takes 4 trys to reset the ECU
Checked all the wiring and no issues at all

It rained again last night and the same thing happened this morning - the alarm system was completely dead including the over-ride. Left it for 2 hours and came back to it and its working. The car started fine on both occassions afterwards and there doesnt seem any battery issue - is it possible that with the dampness? the battery Voltage could have dropped and somehow shorted the alarm system?

I am changing the battery anyway which is only 18 months old so probably nothing to do with the battery

What I dont understand is that the system worked fine for 18 months and then suddenly I have an issue with it

I have been quoted £350+Vat to swap the ECU/Brain and any ancillory bits that need attaching on the Cobra (thats all in fitted with new key fobs).

This price sounds high to me as most of the work is presumably the wiring and this is all done

Am I best having the whole thing ripped out and replaced with something else

Dont really want to replace the Alarm ECU for it to simply strand me when it plays up again

sounds like water is getting to the alarm ecu. look in at where the ecu is, and get someone else to run a hosepipe on the outside of the car close to where the ecu is mounted. you should see where the water is coming in then.

No water getting in - checked it

It just did it again this morning - intermittant fault - drive to nursery, park up, drop child off come back and the alarm system and over-ride is dead and thats after a previous day

I do wonder if changing the alarm system will work - definately never come across anything like this before

Now having to call RAC out, again to get it towed home as no alarm place is open this morning

Anyone know any alarm fitters in West London - Cobra specialist would be nice!!
