Just thought you may be interested in the following:-

Ive protected my scoob with a £70 black and white CCTV camera which is linked to my PC and im running some software called Crime Catcher (www.new-software.co.uk)
Basically the camera is watching my scoob, when the software is running if anyone walks into the view of the camera then the software will record the video to your PC and at the same time you can get the PC to play any .WAV file, hopefully waking u up during the nite so you can sort the twocing scum out

 

out of interest what make webcam are you using? lots of the ones I've seen wouldn't be able to give you a decent picture at any distance e.g. if pointing at a car from a house....

After the recent loss of a scoob I've set up a similar system. (You can get a low lux colour camera for not much more than this.) I didn't know about the software, so I hooked up an IR detector which is designed to start a video machine. (You need a fire wire card to get this to work - I already had one). The really clever bit (I thought) was to record a wav file of me screaming "put your hands in the air and move away from the car or I'll let the dogs out you ba5tard." I have the sound playing full volume through an old speaker hung under the eaves. I tested the system and truly believed it was brilliant until two nights afetr installation I heard the wav. It scared the **** out of me, it woke the wife and both kids, and when I eventually recovered enough to look out of the window the milkman was standing in the drive with his hands in the air surrounded by broken milk bottles and milk

Would prefer to buy from the UK though .. any ideas if anywhere here sells the same type of thing?

Other option is to get a decent high res webcam, but haven't seen any wireless ones.

Could you give some more info please:
1. What is the make of the IR detector, which is designed to start a video machine?
2. Does this start the machine in record mode - I presume it does?
3. What was the make of the (IEEE 1394) fire wire card?

Dwilki,
1. Don't know. (Its up the side of the house and I'm in work.) Look for any cctv system with autovideo start or auto channel switching. This will have a pir with scart or video composite output
2. Correct - but on the PC you need to be running something like Ulead video Studio. This will accept the video start signal and start recording. You can also set this to play sounds for start, stop error etc much like windows
3. The 1394 is a cheapie unbranded one. Windoze picks it up as a motorolla. (I think there are only two current chips for these cards. The other one is Texas Instrument.) It needs to have a scart feed (or video composite feed)

This needs a lot of messing about. The crime catcher software mentioned by Joe Razz with a low lux colour camera looks like the easiest solution
