Went to local key cutting place yesterday as my key looks a bit weak. He tried several times to match my key however in placing it in the ignition it would turn on but the key wouldn't come out without pushing the barrel at the same time. The worrying thing is I tried another place today and same thing, do you have to have a special key cut(ie Dealer), and do they differ as my car is an import?
Any help appreciated (preferably a place locally in Fife to do it).
Al.

Give your local dealer a quick call.

Cant see why they would be different from any other car though.

I have an import WRX, I got a spare key cut for it no problem. It's the same key type as the old Datsun's apparently.

I don't think its that simple. I know I got a special STI key cut and it was no good. Something about a small transmitter in the key itself. Best check with a dealer, I think they are expensive.

Try and *wear* the new key down with a wire brush or to take any rough edges off it.
It may also be that the machinery used didn't quite duplicate it properly (set up of machine), though unlikely if you tried another place to cut a new key.

I take it you have an older scoob in which case it could be wear in the actual barrel itself, hence wire brushing the new key.

If it's '99 on, then Dave has a point in that the transponder for the immobiliser is within the key fob itself, so even if the key turned okay, your car won't start as it can't detect the transponder, that's why dealers can charge loadsa money for their spare keys.

Just got a key cut today for MY95 WRX import and it works fine, same as Nissan/Datsun keys.

Ok, so I know I'm dragging up a thread thats now f a i r l y old, but I was thinking bout this today since I only have 1 key for MY99
(uk).
Does this mean i too have to have a dealer-made copy or does it differ somehow with the imports?
The key doesn't look that special - hadn't realised about the transponder being in there since my friend's (older) import just looks like a bog standard metal key which looks easy to copy.
If I do have to get it from the dealer - any ideas how much I should be looking at?
Cheers

i got a spare key cut by my local key cutting place.
I have a 97 wrx-sti(import).
Worked perfectly, the guy in the shop took about 5 mins looking throught his book tho. He seemed under the impression that there was supposed to be a transmitter or something in the key for my year of impreza. Maybe thats for UK models.
I just told him no there's nothing in the key and that was it,cut key for me,tried it in car and no probs.

If you have a UK model maybe there is meant to be something in the key.
