Question

Lads,

I posted this in the brakes forum, but got little response.

Can people confirm just how much brake fluid is needed on the MY99/00 UK cars to completely re-fill the system?

I had my Godspeed kit fitted yesterday and they only use 500ml of fluid. I gave them 3x500ml bottles if needed, so I can't understand why they would leave any of the OEM gunk in the system.

OK, it's sounding like the guys didn't drain the full system properly.

I'll give them a phone this afternoon to see what they have to say about it.

Hi Stefan

500ml is just about enough to refill the brake system.

However you usually waste some bleeding the system through so I've used about 750ml in the past.

Red face

getting even more confused as the day goes on
[/scratches head]

Ian Godney e-mailed me to say

when we fit a kit we bleed the front to start with a full bottle , this will flush any of the fluid through from the reservoir through to the calipers , we then use a full bottle on the rear , you want to make sure the system is fully flushed through or you will have old fluid still in the system , we then use the 3rd bottle to top the system and give the rest to the customer to top up as and when necessary
They were in no rush for time to complete the install and I supplied all the parts, so I can't think of a reason why they'd leave cr@p in the system.

The mechanic who did the work has a P1, so I assume he'd know exactly what it took to do the job properly. Worst comes to the worst and they'll need to re-bleed them.

I'm gonna pop-in to the garage on Thursday once I have the caliper pins from Ian. I'll ask them exactly how they bled and re-filled the system.
