amazed to see that the number of people who can speak scottish gaelic has fallen below 60,000.
i just don't get it, you scotts are possible more proud of your identity than us welsh yet your letting your language and heritage die.
save it while you can

well get it taught, we had to survive an era where children who could only speak welsh were punished if they spoke any language other than english in schools (btw that was in the 20th centuary!)
ps im not welsh nationalist, just get peeved when i see a country loosing its id, england is loosing it too, slowly becoming a clone of america

There are still a few schools give the option of this tongue
However the kids of today don't give a **** about anything unless it involves ps2 or p.c or tv
I agree it is a disgrace that the gaelic is vanishing.
This was is my grandfathers native tongue he had to learn to speak "english" as a boy.
I agree more should be done to re kindle it

The problem is that gaelic has never been as widespread as Welsh is in Wales. It's never really been spoken in the central belt where 80% of the Scottish population live. They don't have much reason to care about gaelic. The main area of gaelic speakers is the Western Isles and most of the natives tend to leave to be replaced by, dare I say it, prodominantly English! And they have no interest in speaking gaelic obviously. Hence, there are more Polish than gaelic speakers in Scotland! My tu'pence worth....
