Cool New South Yorks Member having a look.....

Hey Up Peepz,

Basically I am in the process of looking for a new car when i eventually sell my current one.
I own a P2 Volvo V70 T5 and a RR P38.
Looking at selling the T5 and replacing it with a Classic Impreza. Looking to spend up to a max of £3k but would rather spend about £2k so I have some breathing space for servicing etc.

Off i go hunting for info

Cheerz

Cheerz pal. As i have never been driven around in an Impreza i could do with a bit of info with what to look out for. Im good at buying cars in general but i mean more Scooby specific stuff such as Gearbox Crunches/whines.

Ive heard of something called Piston Slap but never heard it with my ears!

Well they go like the stink yea the dreaded piston slap it's bad when cold not so when warm/hot,I've actually only owned the 1 impreza so far (touch wood) but I'll list a few things

1 RUST arches mainly,if you find rust peel back boot carpet and see the extent of damage
2 crunches depends if previous owner has tore **** out of it but I'm pretty sure a lot of early classics crunch from 1st into 2nd but if you put it in neutral then second it doesn't crunch (personal experience)
3 head gaskets, check oil and coolant make sure there not mixing, twist off the oil filler cap if it's bellowing smoke out avoid
4 bent frames, you'll find a lot of these
5 wait for a good one or you'll end up with a ****ter and believe, there's a lot

Point number 5 is why my budget is varied. I expect quite alot are going to be ragged but if its done once up to temp then great if its straight from the off then there is going to be issues.

Cheerz i will definately keep my eyes peeled.

Where in Sheff are you?
Im up High Green

An hour or two spent reading on here and Googling, then come back and ask some people on here to sort out the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

Even here, you will get folk telling you , "It's your car, do it if you want, what can go wrong, it worked on my RS Turbo?

Carefully does it. Write out a list of questions, then ask on here ONE at a TIME.

Imprezas don't appreciate careless tuning, trust me.

Oh, and turner has missed out the obvious cars you'll meet: the UK spec cars. Downspecced in every department from engine to interior, from aircon to rear wash-wipe, they made only 208, then 211, then 218 bhp in standard form. But they still sold for £5000 MORE here than the better cars sold for in Japan.

Carefully tuned they make 280-300, carelessly tuned, you'll come across yet another noise common to these cars: det.

Thanks for the advice. I will take it on board.
Im not really one for chasing numbers on Dyno/Remaps etc.
I want more drivability rather just chasing 'peak' HP numbers.
