Default About to purchase a Type R

Hi all

After some careful consideration I have taken the plunge and have sold my TDi Leon FR+, in hope of buying a decent Type R. I've always wanted one and thought why not.

So really i am after some general advice as the Type R I have my eye one had a rebuild done 3k miles ago. The main thing I am worried about is buying one driving few miles and the bottom end goes, so one that has had a rebuild seems the best choice. So far I have read that a baffled sump and uprated oil pump help in preventing this (along with regular servicing and careful driving)
The seller hasn't detailed much about the rebuild apart from saying it had a short block replacement done which had 53k on it..

This is what I am thinking of

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...type-r/1734195

If anyone has any helpful hints or guidance I would be very grateful

Not being picky. He does mean hayward and Scott not Howard and Scott.

The advert says it had a rebuild 3K ago but it hasn't, its just had a second hand short motor fitted.
I wouldn't buy that car.

Yeah I saw that car on my daily pistonheads, ebay, autotrader, car and classic ritual searching and wasen't overly impressed with it either, why not save up a bit more and keep an eye out for one on here?

The Type R is not lightweight, only the bonnet is alloy. Its not a Forge TMIC.

Hi all many thanks for the help.
I have decided to go for this

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...-price/1915270

Car seems really genuine and is much more within my budget. Its got all the rebuild documented and has been looked after by scoobytech so fingers crossed.Going to look and hopefully drive away tomorrow!

That's a good choice and cheap with the fresh build, you'll have some cash left to get it mapped with an esl daughter board too and still change for some decent front brakes.

Wise man.

Id deffo rather have £3300 tied up in that than 5K in the type r you originally linked.
I would budget for an esl board and mapping though straight away.

awesome! thanks dudes, yer looking forward to tomorrow
Just out of interest what sort of cost would mapping it to say 350bhp be? Do I need to upgrade anything when doing this? I assume maybe a larger turbo and FMIC? Or would what's on there be capable?

Search for it fella. There are loads of posts on here about you what you need for that. No need to add to the list!

Personally, forget 350bhp. Buy it, drive it and decide what you want to do from there. These are seriously quick cars in standard trim.

you'll defo get 330 out of whats on there and you won't knacker the gear box at that, should have a vf28 on it so good for that power, I think it's around £350 400 for the esl, speak to simon AKA jgm on here he's your man for the job.

Agreed, definitely a VF23 on a V3. The year after had a VF24 and then I think the V5/V6 had a VF28/29.

looks a cracking STi that, nice find :-) Hard to find in pretty much stock trim with a nice engine build so £3300 sounds like a bargain to me. Really like the fact its had a nice build but kept at more or less stock power, that should take anything you can throw at it. As others have said I wouldn't worry about mods to begin with, just enjoy it.

You sound like you've done your research as well so you should be all set, still try not to get carried away and do the usual checks, as we all know photos can hide a multitude of sins! I'd still be getting in the jack compartment with a bright light to check the inner arch and have a feel along the sill covers where the cut outs for the jack are and make sure you can feel solid metal above in these areas, will only take a few mins max.

If all goes well enjoy the drive home!

Well I picked her up today and currently on my way back home. 250mile trip. Only 120 left.

Absolutely amazing car. Gear box is tight and so mechanically smooth. The power is unreal going from a seat tdi! I haven't taken it past 5k revs yet as im a bit weary and also im so used to low revving tdi's lol so I probably haven't felt the full power.

I love the stock look It really does look great in the flesh.

The guy who I bought it off was a doctor in his 50's! Definitely wasn't expecting that but he definitely looked after it well. He's just got a skyline as a replacement

It has more than enough power for me tbh so probably won't get it mapped higher as it is just shy of 300hp.

If the weather ever sorts itself out I'll be giving the paint a good detailing and post some pics on a new thread

Only thing I would like to do is get the inlet manifold re painted red and clean the engine bay

All in all this is the fastest and most exciting car I have ever purchased and for 3300 I think it was a steal.
