What would a subaru main dealer charge for the following if i were to take my 2004 sti in.

Oil and filter change
Spark plugs
Rear pads

There's only a couple of hours there, maybe £250 worth of parts?

Call it £350?

[/total guess]

All more than doable yourself though

Just imagine doing it every week.

You'd save yourself over £18k per year !

Are Subaru main dealers that cheap? £50 an hour? Sod 'specialists' i'll take mine to main dealer in future, my local specialist charges more than that!

No idea, it was a total guess.

My specialists are all circa £50p/h but then I don't pay London tax

He mentioned main dealer prices, hence query, thought it was cheap!

I know VW dealerships charge around £50 a half hour (outside of London), so going on that £200 for that service work...

I'd rather have the specialist over main dealer everyday though.... main dealers of any manufacturer always seem to be completely incompetent to me.

I guess if you have good specialist could be true...last two times my car has been in to a specialist things have been broken with no acceptance of it, first time I spent a couple of hours having to put the work right, and second time I havent replaced the part broken yet nor fixed the squeak that has appeared!

I see your point, specialists should be looking after their very unique customer base better than that really.

LDNSTI - It's all very well servicing a car yourself and yes you do save lots of money. However one thing you don't get is a dealer/specialist stamp, which could make it difficult to sell in the future. So whilst you save in the interim, your car will sell for less in the future (unless to plan to run it until it dies)

I don't agree there, yes it looks nice to have you booked stamped up. But it doesn't actually mean it has been well maintained.

There are plenty of members on here that would do a much more thorough job of maintaining their car than Subaru main dealer ever would.

The car and knowledge the owner has for the car is far more important I think.

Service stamps don't mean owt to me. I'm not selling the car. The only place it's going is to my son in a few years.

+1 for doing it yourself (unless its shiney and new ) just use quality parts and keep all receipts along with a record of mileage when you've replaced stuff.

Totally agree, I'd take a book full of receipts for oil, filters and other service items from a bloke that does it himself over a stamped book any day of the week. So easily forged and most of them don't tell you what kind of service it's had done.

I once bought a car and the previous owner had a box file of paperwork, including every tax disc the car had ever had prit sticked on to a4 paper. You know you're on to a winner with that.

You say that in principal but it depends who you are buying off and many people can put on a 'nice guy face ' knowing they cross threaded the sump bung and didn't bother to get it fixed as they where selling it

But a so called specialist once conned me and sold a pure heap of **** with a folder full of forged paperwork so it's hard to trust!

Main dealers often get a negative press but they're not all bad. In fact some are very good.

Phone them up and see what they'll do you.

I can't speak highly enough of Steven Holland at Mangoletsi and Rob Ostle at Stan Palmer.

my last blob had 52k on the clock, FSH and a big folder with every receipt, I thought everything was fine with it, but had rattles and squeaks. Then I got my new blob (both 05 reg), with over 100k and almost no receipts, I spoke to the small garage that were selling it to find out about it, they knew the car from new. the first owner was a rich woman, whenever it went in for service she said to do everything needed, then after 3 years she bought a new sti and gave it to her daughter. her daughter had it 3 years and her mum still paid for everything (her mum bought a new car and gave her the sti), so then I went to have a look at it. it drove like new, no rattles or squeakes, pulled great (it made 242bhp std, before any mods). I got it for a great price because all the people that enquired about it wanted all the receipts, I was happy to view it and have a drive to make my decision.

if I had test drove the 2 blob's I have owned side by side, the 100k one with no stamped service book would have been my choice

FSH by dealers is not the magical thing people try to make it. as long as it drives well and sounds fine, then I can't see the fuss

I can assure you that a main dealer would charge you an awful lot more than £100 in labour to do that list of jobs.
