The WRX is the low fat version. Unless you modify a WRX very heavily there is a gulf between the two in terms of ability.

Anyone who argues that the WRX is superior to an STi (even in WRX PPP form vs standard STi) is deluded. The WRX is basically a mildly reworked Impreza sporting an engine with a little potency.

The STi has a host of heavy duty upgrades that give it a much greater range of talent due to superior brembo brakes, suspension, gearbox and a completely reworked engine.

The WRX is cheaper for a reason and can be made quite quick on a relatively modest budget, that I do not dispute.

After owning a V3 and V4 STI, a UK MY99 Turbo and now a 2005 WRX, honestly, on the road, there isn't a lot a difference. I see a lot of comments on here by STI owners just trying to make themselves feel better about spending more on their purchase. Don't get me wrong, when the sun is shining and road is clear, knowing that you're driving a technically superior car such as the STI, it does give you a bit more of that 'special' feeling. But I wouldn't call it a deal breaker.

Each to their own I say. Try both and make up your own mind. thumb: (as I have done over 10 years)

On UK roads, they are both very capable cars. Plus, there hardly seems to be any Impreza's on the road now anyway, so not very likely that every other car you see is going to be an STI. If ***** waving is more your thing as well as pub talk stats, then I guess you have no choice but to go for the STI.

The sti is the better car (when comparing the same year WRX car), its a given. The only people that dispute this are, funnily enough, WRX owners.

My first Impreza was a JDM WRX and over the 4 years of owning it i pretty much changed the car to look and perform like an STI..... should of bought an STI in the first place.

Not disputing that. But that doesn't make the WRX a **** car. To be honest, I'm so glad I didn't listen to many newage sti is owners on here, otherwise I would have ended up with a bmw rather than my WRX.

As said, drive both and make up your own mind.

I had a wrx bug few years now blob sti. Tbh I think they are different cars and obviously suit different people. Id be happy with either as the both make the right noise lol but it is down to personal preference as some people prefer the wrx and some the sti. The wrx is a fun capable car cheapish to run and comfortable. The sti is in my eyes is a drivers car its more rough and ready ( or am I getting old???) Lol they both are fantastic and reliable. It just depends what floats your boat.
I will say this tho my blob sti is not that much different on fuel to the wrx ( driven carefuly of course)
I know on the sti bigger brakes suspension etc but to some people that doesnt matter its all about the flat four noise bit of turbo boost and 4wd handling.
As the old saying goes it doesnt matter how big it is......... haha

cheers

A proper seach on here would have handed you the details you were asking for.

Also you can not compare a classic to a newage, and a newage 2.0 to another newage 2.5.

If Subaru only released the WRX I wouldn't of bought a Subaru. The Sti looks and performs better.

I dont see the point in this question sti all the way in my book you get the real deal in my book a wrx is like buying a porsche boxster because you cant have the best save save save and do it the right way round the first time.

How can people keep saying that the STI is better but no one knows the diffences? How do you know

The sti is better obviously but iv just never been interested in owning one.
I was looking at astra turbos before ect 225 bhp was enough for me. Never even considered getting an sti

How about this. Tell me why your sti is better and I'll tell you what I'm planing to do to my car

So yeah.
Gearbox is a 6 speed and built better
Its got an adjustable centre diff and LSD front and rear

Suspension I'm heading is just harder with a higher damper rate. Turbo is a td05 insted off 04

Intercooler is bigger

Come on guys! I'm a sucker for the details!

There is no doubting the STI is a "better base" car for mods, but if you want a daily commute, then either, HOWEVER that said the STI is still that little bit better in standard form, it can't be argued if £ and insurance is no problem.

I can't be arsed to list the differences, it's been covered a thousand times. But you referred to a 6 speed, so that's 2001 to present STI, they didn't do a TD05

Never gets boring

Why do you want to know ?... to justify or negate not buying an STi ?

Engine Specs
Bigger Brembo Brakes
Inverted Suspension, Larger ARB's, Solid front droplinks, alloy wishbones
Stronger 6 Speed Gearbox, clutch, flywheel, solid gearbox mount, stronger diff etc
Interior, clocks, smaller wheel
Aero Package
Larger Intercooler and uprated Y pipe
Larger Scoop and Undertray
Larger VF30/35/43 (UK) turbo
Larger Injectors
Decatted Up pipe
Faster flowing exhaust system
Larger wheels and tyres...

The list goes on mate, the difference in parts is huge

I think you've summed it up there. If you intend to only change minor things then an STI is probably the better buy, if you intend to change the car to how you want it over a longer period of time then it's WRX all the way.

I can only speak about my experience, and having never owned a newage I can only compare my 1994 WRX to my 1998 STI (Type R). As a daily, mainly because of the late spool of the TD05 the WRX was easier to drive and more comfortable. If I wanted a weekend blast it was OK but wasn't as sharp. Driving my Type R to work before it was taken off road was bumpy and trying to keep it off boost until it warmed up was a nightmare as the VF wanted to come alive ASAP. Both the WRX and STI's brake setup's are poor, The STI's is only slightly better but I can't tell if that is due to having 2 pot rear instead of 1pot, or 4 pot fronts instead of 2 pot. I certainly was disappointed when I fitted a set of 4 pots on my WRX just before I sold it.
But when I got the chance to stretch the Type R's leg's it was quite a margin above the WRX, a completely different animal. But then that may have been the difference in chassis.
My Mrs wants an Impreza as a second car, purely for when the weather is poor. When it's snowed before I've taken her Punto and left her mine, just so I know she's a little safer on the school run. If we do get her one then it'd be a Newage WRX or even a GL, as they are cheaper and she doesn't need all the little upgrades. If I was to buy myself a daily, or second car I'd buy a newage STI and I'd like to think I'd leave it as standard.

STI owners can never really get their head around the fact the WRX owners actually chose a WRX over an STI, as they have different reasons to own them. WRX owners will always say that STI's are only marginally better but there's a bigger margin in price. It's only the 6 speed box most WRX owners would want from a newage STI as I understand the newage suspension and Brembo's aren't the ultimate package?.
