Ive owned a 96 STI 3 Wagon for nearly 2 years & I still get out smiling & will one day get a newer one. They are also much prettier than that new thing (in my opinion)
Make sure you get a good one as they are expensive to run without getting a dodgy one (probably not expensive considering the level of performance they give)
The only negative side is that the ride is hard, ideal for the driver but it does not make the best family car but they will get used to it, my wife wasnt overkeen until she drove it a couple of times & found out what its all about.
If you have not already had an Insurance quote get one before you buy or you may get a shock.
Ring up the Scooby specialists like Scoobysport or TSL, they know the STI better than many & are likely to give you good pointers, you may as well contact them as you will probably end up buying something from them in the future
If you can find somebody who knows (not reckons they know) Subarus
take them with you to check it over, even if you have to pay it is worth it. I found a local company who agreed to check mine out & the previous owner didnt mind & this also meant it went up on the ramps, cost me £50 but it was worth it.
If you cant find anybody try chatting to the service dept of your local Subaru dealer, they may have a mechanic who fancys some cash, I know the STI is an import but its still basically a Subaru
Also do the obvious checks to see if its nicked or an Insurance wright off
