Default Which top mount intercooler is best for a version 3?

Hi,

I've just picked up a tidy version 3 WRX and I don't want to chop the car about to fit a front mount and I know that newage intercoolers fit later classics but this is my first version 3

Do newage sti intercoolers fit version 3 & 4's or do they only fit version 5 & 6?

Sorry for the dumb question.

Thanks,

Paul

They do Paul but you have some messing about with the d/v, as the later intercoolers have the dv bolted directly to the cooler. This means it catches on the Idle control valve, so needs an adaptor plate with a little pipe coming off it

Thanks for the information mate i didn't know that the idle control valve clashed with the dump valve

Any idea who makes the adapters please? I'm just looking to run a standard re-circ valve from whichever Impreza model that I can get to fit.

Why not fit a newage WRX intercooler as they will be dirt cheap to buy and still a good size bigger than what you have

That's also an option Steve, I wanted to see what the options were for a version 3 before committing to anything. Does the WRX one go straight on or does the dump valve get in the way again like the STI one?

Think it would still foul, though the intercooler is smaller.

You could try this...

That's very nice mate but a lot of effort for a car that I'm only thinking of keeping for 6 months and 1 that I didn't plan on spending much time modifying I was just looking for a simple bolt on modification but it's now food for thought.

Why not just a version 3/4 STI cooler?

Are later classic sti ones much of an upgrade? I didn't think there was that much difference.

I'm still considering my options so thanks for the offers

I'm using a newage STI intercooler on my V4. It has been modded though for the original V4 dump valve. I think originally Zen did the work. You do need to cut down the brake reservoir by the bulkhead though.

Do you have any photos please? I don't mind cutting that down and that's what Carl had done in the link that Banny put up.

Thanks
