Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm looking at buying an 04 plate STi, which I'm told is JDM spec.
The dealer selling the car has been told by a Subaru 'expert' that it is chain driven, rather than belt. I'm 99% certain that's not correct but I am occasionally wrong.
Were there ever any versions around that age that were chain driven?

as above only the 6cylinder and diesel engines have ever been partially/fully chain driven...........

4cyl lumps are all belt

I'm wondering if the expert is fictional, and just a way of covering the fact that the belt hasn't been replaced.

Exactly.
Ive also met some of these 'experts', I like it when they say " he used to work for prodrive". The amount of times I've heard that one is unbelievable.
