Having now had a closer look at this yellow/green gunk that the dealer has left all over my engine saying it is there for protection, I am conviced this is b*ll****. Most of this stuff is over the rubber and plastic parts--Havig started removing it myself I reckon they dont bother because it is bloody time consuming and dificult to remove.
140 miles now car is awesome but its painful running it in

Gunk is standard, you may also find it inside the doors too.

Bit like Waxoil, which has been around for decades.

Cool

Both my scoobs had it and I was advised against removing it.

Mine's had it since new also, looks all shiny at first. Open my bonnet the other day just to check that the engine was still there and couldn't believe how grubby it looked. All the dirt had stuck to the gunk. I suppose this isn't bad for 3 years though.

I presume it is there to protect the engine from the salty air whilst it travels across the globe from Japan.

If Scoobs have always had it them my MY00 must have had it removed by my dealer because my car was "clean" when I picked up it.

I would remove it, but then I keep my engine bay fairly clean anyway. I guess if you don't ever want to clean the engine bay then leave it on......

Matt, wasn't yours a dirty, cheap, inferior import? (Like mine)?
