Official Extended Warranty - worth it or not ?
#1
My pride and joy is just coming up to 3 yrs old and will be coming out of warranty shortly. I have had all the blurb thru about extending but am tempted to do without. Would be very interested to hear of your experiences, good or bad, with the official scheme.
In the last couple of years I have only had one very minor thing done under warranty - replacement of an under body shield that fell off.
My car is PPP'd with upgraded brakes and replacement down and centre sections, otherwise standard.
Any thoughts ?

Does anyone know what's actually covered in the extended warranty (or more importantly what isn't)???
I did notice that the brochure mentions the cover is "almost as comprehensive" as the 3 year one.
I'd assume Gearbox, Clutch wouldn't be on that list

I think clutches are still covered by the extended warranty, mine got changed 'bout a month ago (MY98) (Unless it was good-will)

P.S. Couldn't tell you for sure, not read any details!!!!

I had a letter this morning from Subaru offering me an extended warranty on my Forester S Turbo. I won't bother as I think I am getting rid of the old girl this summer. If I was keeping her I think I might. Its the Austin Maxi that needs a bloomin warranty, always in need of attention. But then it is highly tuned.....Blutes

£588 for 3 yrs (if I remember). Not worth thinking about if you have ANY non Subaru mod - I had slap and they said my non std rising rate fuel regulator produced extra power which caused the slap !!
OK if you have NO mods at all !! Otherwise dont even think about it.

Received my 'Extended Warranty' offer this morning - Impreza Turbo £388(incl VAT) for 2 years or 60k miles. This price doesn't seem unreasonable although the letter does say the 'package provides NEAR identical cover to our original Warranty'.
I have written to Subaru UK to find out what items are NOT included in the extended warranty that were included in the original manufacturer warranty. I will post their reply on here as soon as I hear from them.
Has anyone else questioned Subaru about this?

Does that mean they can cover you up to a maximum mileage of 60k?
or another 60k over the 2 years?
Mine has 46k on it - does this mean that 14k (about 8 months) cover will cost me £388 ?

worth noting that the warranty does include a comprehensive breakdown service. I have also looked into but I have a few small mods (brakes, back-box plus a couple planned) and I get free breakdown cover with my bank anyway and can get Parts-n-Labour protection (first £500, up to 3 times in any year) for about another £50, so think I'll go this route, especially as it covers any car. This is with AA.
If you want total European, homestart and parts protection it costs around £170 per year for you and partner.
Cheers

I got one too, but as the car was written off 6 months ago and I'm stil arguing with them about replacement of warped alcons a year ago which they refused as the car had 'been on a track', I don't think I'll bother!!

Ring up the sales desk and ask if they will cover any non Subaru mods. I asked about my TSL Discs + Pads and got told they won't cover the rest of the car period.
I just took the option of Subaru Assist for another year at £69 and have started to de-cat the sucker instead

I have found that the subaru is a damn reliable car and bought mine when it was 5years old with no warentee and it is now just over 6years old and has just clicked over the hundred k mark.
I am still as happy with it as when I bought it and nothing has gone wrong.. <touch wood>... I think you have to weigh up the piece of mind aspect, and bear in mind that most problems will already be ironed out with the car in the first 3years. Wear and tear are going to be your main expense which will not be covered on the warentee.
If you intend selling the car on it will give the buyer a bit of piece of mind and might be worth the money to help you sell it later.
Personnally for £388 I'd probably go for it, but at £588 it is a bit too much.. if my car was standard of course.
Just my 2p's worth

Thanks chaps.
I didn't realise that Subaru Assistance could be extended without the warranty - at seventy quidish it compares well against AA/RAC, especially if europe is included.
I think I may take a chance and let the warranty go - particularly as payment time coincides with the 3 yr cambelt service and a trip to Le Mans !!

MY99 under extended warranty, O2 sensor broke the other day, fixed under warranty.
It probably paid for itself in that 1 job.
But then your car may never go wrong....

The warranty isn't run by Subaru, but by an insurance company.
I have heard several stories of claims being refused. Reasons have included:
Serviced late, serviced by non Subaru garage, non standard part fitted (irrespective of effect on claim). If the claim is refused, don't bother calling Subaru. They will just refer you back to the insurance company.
As with any such policy, read the small print first and decide if its exactly right for you, before handing over your money.

My car came with a 1 year warranty when I bought it from a dealer at the end of last year. Mine states all servicing must be carried out by a Subaru dealer using Subaru parts. 75k service is coming up and it's going to cost more to service it than I could get it done at specialist. I reckon you need to take account of this, especially if you've got a big service coming up.

Neither did I Steel Blue. I got a letter offering the extension, then a reminder that the deadline was approaching for the warranty. Third letter offered SA on it's own for the £69. Coverage is exactly the same as previous years AFAIK, so wins hands down over AA/RAC etc.
Look at Pete's comments and see why I asked upfront about covering a modded car.

I decided not to bother with the extended warranty. I'm getting my O2 sensor replaced as it was reported before the warranty expired.
It is a tad expensive (£100+), but it takes 2mins to fit. I've know plenty of people who are mechanics, so the only worry is getting the parts cheaper than through a Dealer.

Flat 4 x 4 - As I read the letter it is £388 for 24 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, so the current mileage on the car does not matter. The other option is 24 months or unlimted mileage and this costs £578. One year options are available for £256 and £385 respectively.
There is a note a the bottom of the letter that states the 'Extended Warranty package is only available if your vehicle has covered less than 60,000 miles and has been serviced by an officially apointed Subaru Dealer'.
JGM - From what I have read on here, in mags and also heard from other people it does seem that Subaru's have generally a good reliability record and this is something that is counting against me getting the extended warranty. I have no mods at present(apart from cosmetic) and do not intend to do any in the near future so like you, for £388 I would probably go for it(depending on what Subaru say in their reply to my letter - see above).
