My opinion probably isnt much use LOL as i have never heard a popped turbo, but that sounds like the turbo is working but has the pipe blown off from turbo to intercooler ?

If not, :-(

Wish it was just a pipe, if a pipe poped off you would loose boost, car was still boosting.. I have blown 3 turbos in the past 7 years and this is the first one that has blown like this.

Vid isn't working for me, guessing because im using a phone.

I've had a turbo all of a sudden start to make a screeching sort of noise. I was certain it was the bearings as was still making boost but made an awful noise.
After further investigation I discovered a couple of the downipe to turbo bolts had come slighly loose. This was allowing air to squeeze out on boost and make a very loud screaming/screeching noise. Tightened the bolts up and all sorted, I'd of bet my life savings the bearings had gone though.

Mine is making a wining noise, it sounds like a supercharger almost. Would of thought if it was a joint it would be more of a blowing noise as aposed to a whining noise..

I have always associated blown turbos with smoke, noise, poor performance, and more smoke, smoke being the ultimate indicator of a blown turbo. But that was mostly turbos with thrust bearings and not a roller bearing core maybe they behave differently i.e different symptoms when there failing.keep us informed with your findings.SJ.

Mine is a journal bearing bud. No smoke and no loss of oil that i could see, which really confused me. I will pull the turbo out and have a look when i get a chance

Hi Tyler

Sorry hear that, but please check the Intercooler pipework if its tight and if its everything tight and secure

MD range should be Ball bearing, not the thrust bearing,MD range has been or is based on the Garrett Ball bearing core

Aha then yes 18G is journal/Thrust bearing turbo

Just double check if its everything is tight and then try,18G is easily to rebuild and should be not so expensive

Not sure, but Kamak or others companies selling Billet wheel for 18G or try speak with John@braveheart_sti http://www.braveheartracingdevelopments.com/

let's just hope it is a split.
can you hear it with bonnet up if you rev the car with the cable to get a better idea where the sound is coming from.

Really hope so to..

Tried reving it with bonnet open but stationary the turbo does not really come under load, the car needs to be moving..

Question I have is would this of caused the wine. Its the turbo up pipe. As impeller feels fine. No more play than a td05 18g would have. No oil either end either.
