CDS steel bending problems
So spent a small fortune on cds steel, about 16m of it to build my roll cage, cut it into lengths for main hoop n front legs go to make the first bend and this happens;
The bloke who was doing the bending said he's never seen it before. It's 48mm by 2.5mm wall thickness. Snapped like a carrot! Was well n truly pissed off after waiting to get this steel for two weeks.
Anyone seen this? Must I use a mandrel bender? Personally I think the steel is mixed wrong n it'll be going back on Monday!

I don't want to start hares running all over the place but keep a sample of the steel (cuttings might suffice), just in case you need to have it analysed (and of course the invoice, Order etc as proof of what was ordered and what you were charged for - hopefully the same thing).
Hopefully the company's customer service will be OK, and you'll get satisfaction.
I hope it works out.

Fill it with sand before bending and it won't snap.
What type of bender did you use? I have a hydraulic jack type and have never had this issue. And if doing any other. Type of bending I fill it with sand and if required heat it up

It is a hydraulic type yeh, but its not a small thing, it's a proper machine stands about metre high and over a metre long. As you said welshchap, probably best keeping a sample, I ordered the steel through the local welding shop. I've rang him and he said he has receipt and will be ringing through first thing in morning to enquiry bout the steel. I read about filling it with sand online, might be worth a try. I did mention it to the bloke who was bending the steel (trying to avoid the term 'bender' ha) but he said he has made numerous bike frames using the steel on 90 degree bend after bend and has never needed it. But what I do know is that the steel wasn't even at a 30 degree and angle when it split like that, and before then it would make the 'X'. Atleast I made my template for the main hoop out of some cheap stuff to copy off. Still frustrting tho!

Exactly my thoughts about in the event of a crash! Well I bought it through the local welding shop, gave him spec of what I wanted, said when he rang up the company he got it from they knew exactly what it was and he made them well aware of its purpose. The bloke is a friend of my dad so I know he's not bs'in me. Guess if the steel is wrong its nones fault but the manufacturers. May just ask for a refund. I'll see what comes of it.

Bare in mind the loads of a crash are different to the load you are putting on the pipe during bending so the effect will be different. Drive a car into it and I doubt you will see that happen!

Erm well I bought some 6x4 sheets of 1mm steel too but I think It works out about £10 a metre. The t45 is the better lighter stuff but its twice price if not more
