I just test drove a Scirocco.
Not totally convinced I should trade in for it but what should I be offering if I am? I HATE dealing with car salesman.

None, there is not a lot of profit in new cars these days and the only way most salesman make commission now is through finance and add-ons. They'll give you the best deal possible just to get some business nowadays.

Hi just wondering if anyone can help me. My subaru is not running right. Every time I open it up it has no power and if I let the throttle go fast then put my foot back down fast it has power and sometimes if I change gear at hight revs it backfires and sometimes the check engine light will come on for a few seconds the the car has no power. It a 1997 impreza turbo 2000. Many thanks

I'd definitely start by asking for at least 10%
Never known any salesman expect to get the screen price.

I've seen loads of used car valuations that are far above 10% of screen price. I rarely get a car from a dealer, if I do I always get an exceptional deal.

Ask for as much as you dare, be cheeky & haggle. Look on the net for offers elsewhere & try to get the salesman to beat it. You normally get a better offer with no PX as dealerships just see it as a PIA these days. If you don't ask you don't get.

I was just having a look at the webuyanycar price and it is £600 more than the trade in price I was offered for my Golf lol. I'm sure they would try and chip a few quid or for the couple of minor scratches the car has though. Plus the £75 transaction fee.

It took me 18 months to get the deal I wanted on my Cosworth. I have only hurried into one car before and I'll never do that again (!).
The car you buy is always worth the price you have in your head (or the cost to change, monthly payment, total outlay whatever you want to call it).
I came across several garages who were on cloud cuckoo land with their prices, eventually I got an offer that was better than I thought I could get.

Actually I was only semi-thinking of buying a Scirrocco, I just wanted to see what they were like really. To be honest I liked it as a car, felt quite responsive and planted, but the 200 hp was ok but not great. Does have plenty of torque at low revs but redlines at 6 k IIRC which makes it a really lazy petrol engine. Not much of a note to speak of either. The cabin is well sound-proofed which is good and bad.

Sciroccos are common so you should IMHO be able to negotiate more on the price. They're very nice cars but not the emperor's new clothes so to speak.
If the dealer wants a quick sale you'll be able to negotiate!

A few weeks back my son-in-law passed his test and his mother insisted on buying their family a car.
Honda Jazz advertised on the forecourt at £3,000.
She told the salesman that she had £1,000 cash on her.
He said "Make it 1600 and it's a deal". That's over 45% off !
I always refer to Parkers Guide and then trawl relevent ads to get a good idea of the price to expect.

I sold my car with wewantanycar.com in the end. I got £500 less than what I was going to advertise it private, and £850 more than the VW dealers offered to PX it for. I'm fairly happy with that 'cos my work schedule makes it very hard to have the time to sell cars. I think I could have got another £200, but I'm a rubbish haggler, and webuyanycar.com only offered £250 less than wewantanycar.com, so I was short of options.
Moral is that main dealers will shaft you hard on the PX.

Before I would have thought a main dealer would offer you a better PX than the webuyanycars.

Unless you're hell bent on having a new car(It's only new the day you buy it.After that it's a used car.) the biggest discount is to buy nearly new.Save thousands & still have all the benefits of warranty etc.

Wife's Corsa CDTi. I think they were/are about £12k brand new (?)
15 months old, 13k on the clock, £6995.
Still got (had) 21 months Vauxhall warranty on it, and no MoT to worry about.
Hoping to p/x it after 18 mths as a good proportion against another.
And now we've got webuyanycar to fall back on...........
Just what is the point of buying new ?
