Well, as having owned classics I've found whether its UK 2000/STI/WRX its much of a muchness when mapped or modified so for £4500 if you can get a bugeye STI then they offer the best bang for buck and would be my choice.

I'd say a nice Blob WRX PPP, a type r for that money is going to need some cash throwing at it, where as a Blob WRX in that price range will be low ish miles and tip top if you buy right.
I think a lot of people make the mistake of buying the bottom end of the higher spec or more desirable car but at the top of their budget (if that makes sense) then either one of two things happens, they need to spend money they don't have to make it right or something major goes wrong and it gets broken or another shed load of cash thrown at it at a later date.
My advice is by the best condition car you can find inside your budget and don't worry too much about which one it is, that way you will enjoy your purchase as opposed to having a bad ownership experience.

I've had a blob wrx, v4 type r v ltd and now have a bug Sti prodrive!!! The newage models are easier to live with as a daily IMHO smoother ride and better interior!!! But the type r's are more raw and fun!!! I love my bug but it ain't no type r!
So I'd say if its gonna be a daily go newage or if a weekend worrier go for a type r.

If you are not too bothered about modifying then i would say for that budget you will get a really nice blobeye wrx, the internals and box are not as strong as an sti but can still be modified to mid 300-350bhp safely, but if you can I would go for a bugeye Sti , you get the stronger internals , bigger turbo ( vf35) 6 speed box, brembos, and nicer interior etc and it will take slightly more power than a wrx . Just my opinion, but what ever you choose you won't regret it.

For the best modifying platform it's a no brainier - Bugeye STi.
Strong block, 6 speed and ugly as **** so a sleeper to the mass of uneducated derv drivers always up your chuff.
For actual looks and standard performance - classic Type-R or skirtless/spoilerless RA.
