Default Ignition barrel or key?

My mate has just bought a standard classic turbo 2000 however when he starts the car he can remove the car key from the ignition barrel and the car keeps running and he can also drive it without the key in the ignition aswell. He says the car hasn't been reported stolen but I'm a bit skeptical as to if he is right or not. If he is telling the truth what else could be up? The key does look a bit worn but surely it shouldn't just slide in and out when started!

Could be either.

A new key will set you back £80 or so, God only knows how much an ignition barrel would cost.

He could look at keyed alike locksets off ebay/breakers?
