Default scoobyclinic, Help 4 Heroes rally car

Hi,

so far this year the rally car has not done well.

First round missed completely due to car not ready.

2nd round disastrous as the heat soaked engine bay caused high oil temps and the syvecs called a halt to proceedings.

3rd round isle of man, car came back with its tongue hanging out, wouldnt rev, suspension rattled to death and fuel pump wiring bodged to make it work after a jack handle shorted the pump wiring and popped the fuel pump fuse.

Once the car was back we sorted all the bits that were hanging off, addressed the fuel pump wiring then popped the car on the dyno, the reason it wouldn’t rev properly was the manifold pressure sensor had gone out of spec, it was telling the engine the incorrect pressure reading, ecu altered fuelling to suit what it was being told hence no revs or power, we had to add 60% more fuel duty to get it to rev and run clean.

New map sensor and a few power runs showed engine healthy, power still good but spool over 1000 RPM down on where it should be.

A quick look in the air box and we found the filter had dropped off and the turbo ingested some of the Isle of Man's finest sand, destroying the billet compressor wheel.

A decision was made to take off the restrictor and bolt an SC46 Billet turbo on there and map the car, lets see just what it can do.

We did and it made some proper power, 500 BHP allowing for tyre loss on the dyno, printout showed 480 BHP if memory serves, on the road full boost, 1.9 bar was at 3200 RPM, car was ballistic.

Never one to rest on our laurels we at the clinic are always up for something new, a bit of testing with feedback, whatever it is as its all knowledge.

an opportunity raised its head yesterday, Wayne our pro driver was to compete in a sprint challenge at tee-side today.

As a shake down for the car with some feed back regarding handling and brakes I seized the chance and put him in the rally car.

Wayne is just about 5 foot tall and has attached some extra thick soles to some old trainers so he can reach the pedals, feed back so far is................

First run Wayne 3 seconds quicker than anyone else.

2nd run other drivers moaned he had an unfair advantage using launch control, so he turned it off and went a second quicker.

after a few tweaks on the damper settings the car handles like a dream, the harder he pushes the more forgiving the car becomes, words such as "world class" and "unbelievable" have been used.

Best class time by a silly amount, and what’s even funnier is he is 5th overall including every car thats there and rally cars from all years worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, radicals and purpose built race cars that look and sound like formula one cars are all competing, some very serious machines out today.

This has not been done to rub anyone up the wrong way but if we are to proceed with the rally car we need to be able to send the car out that we know is good to go, that way we are not sat here scratching our heads wondering if its the engine, suspension, management, mapping etc. if it goes out after a shakedown and a service then its down to the driver and co driver to get a result, assuming something doesn’t break of course.

Will keep you posted.

cheers
Kev

Hi,

Wayne, who piloted the car yesterday is 5 ft, nowt as they say, he removed the soles off an old pair of trainers and glued them onto another old pair, he still only just reached the pedals.

Did no harm though we won with a 9 second advantage over the car that came 2nd.

trophy on show at the clinic, question is where do we go from here, the car is now a sprint car with an SC46 Billet and a map, flick the cal switch and change the turbo back to the restricted billet wheeled VF28 and its a rally car.

At least this weekend proved the cars ability from a suspension and brake set up point of view.

cheers

Unfair advantage.

The car's clearly carrying a few Stone underweight.

Put a Flat Jockey on a steeplechaser and they'd probably win the Grand National.
