Default Why do people lie?

I just can't understand some sellers, I bought a scoob which the callipers on the front were totally seized and ruined, the seller was aware as he claimed he had changed brake pads recently and not only did I find the pads wedged into the callipers on one side, but the other had no pins in and the pads could have fallen out!

I did a straight swap with him for my car, which was worth around £6000 but had a £600 clutch slipping problem, but now he's selling it, has not mentioned the clutch problem and making up lies about the 'last owner' which was me!

I don't understand why people feel the need to lie! He let me drive my children home in a car which callipers were stuffed on.

I have since paid to have them done and they are perfect now, and I 100% enjoy the scoob and I'm so glad I have her. I found most sellers I deal with are really honest but you get the odd one who is more than prepared to lie and cheat you just because they can't afford to run or mend the Subaru!!

He got a good deal from my car im aware of that, but the fact is he had arranged to give me a set amount of money on top pf my car, made me drive halfway up the country then battled me down, Rant over but it just annoys me!

Grrrrr.

Anyway now she's all fixed I'm so happy with her, we're going to japfest this year and I have met so many lovely people through a local club so all in all I'm happy.

I swapped my classic for a forester which turned out it needed a rebulid. Fuming! You get them everywhere.

Pleased your happy with the car, part of me would have walked away on principal when the deal changed, but when you really want something cutting your nose off to spite your face can be a tough choice to make.

For me the worst thing is he let you drive home with dodgy brakes let alone the fact you had your kids with you, he want's stringing up for that the consequences should something have happened don't bare thinking about.

At least it's all fixed and you can get on and enjoy it.

He'll get whats coming to him one day, karma is a b1tch.

People lie because they can. The law over the private selling of goods is a complete joke and a lot of people are as dodgy as **** in this country these days!

It wasn't the impreza he was saying had an elderly owner, it was the car I swapped him that he's now selling on claiming that last owner (me) was an old couple with an allotment....

At the time i had no idea about calliper issues or anything until i got the car home. it was horrifically dangerous.

This is my beautiful baby. After spending nearly a grand on reconditioning the callipers, new pads, new discs, several engine issues including idling too low when she's warm, she's home, and as good as new. I have so much fun with her, and she honestly is a total joy to drive :-)

Angry

There are some some ar5eh0les out there and it happens so much. My girlfriend always says people swap for a reason and its not always for something different

I got my classic WRX saloon back in January this year, I swapped it for my E36 325i convertible in white. Anyway I wanted to get back in to scooby ownership and the WRX was offered as a straight swap. I um'd and rrrr'd but thought ok as it was rust free and only had 55,000 miles on the clock (was dry stored for a while). I asked if there was any other probs with scoob (bit of paint missing off rear bumper, exhaust had a little blow and a bit of dull paint) to which I got a response of no.
When we met the bloke seemed genuine we chatted had a quick nose around cars as it was snowing heavily. Then off on our own ways. About a week later I took the car out (snow had gone) and gave it some beans, just to find out the clutch slipped well. I also found out the rocker gaskets had gone on drivers side (common fault). About 2 weeks ago I found out that the pas pump had gone and was pi55ing oil out down the front of the engine. And over the last week I found that the slight exhaust leak was because the down pipe was rotten and has now cracked completely through and now its in the garage, the turbo bolts are rounded off and the drive shafts are seized solid and atm they can't get them out to be able to change the clutch etc. To say I am well is an understatement tbh, but I swapped so I need to take the rough with the smooth

So now after over £400 in parts and quite possibly something similar in labour costs I am going to love an cherish it! Its staying this time, not like the other scoobs I have had lol

Sorry you've been ripped off EPEUMC :-( seems there's a few out there! I don't know why ppl can't be honest :-(
He told me he couldn't afford to insure the car which u believed as he was a young chavvy lad, although I don't doubt that was partially the truth. He wouldn't have had a grand let alone paid one for it to be sorted. She's a lush car and now she's fixed it's his loss. He obviously wasn't happy with the civic I gave him despite it being immaculate except for a clutch slip problem going into 5th and 6th gear as hes selling it. he got a £7000 car (prob worth nearer to £6000 with the clutch problem and I got the scoob which now is sorted is prob not worth much less so in theory the swap should have been worthwhile.

Anyway I have the last laugh as despite having to pay money etc she is a dream. I once again enjoy driving, taking her up to the moors and spending time at shows & meets with a local scooby club xxx

Mate, I can kinda feel your pain... But I got done in with a Sport and didn't part with my GTI for it.

The seller told me that everything had been done on the Sport... except that it needed a back wheel bearing, it has a mismatch d/s/f door, and a d/s/b bubbling wheel arch. Once I got the car to my local auto shop I found that there was ****loads wrong with it, but the deal was done and dusted according to him.

So in the end I paid £790 for a project that I didn't want. It was meant as a DD for the wife and I whilst shopping for a Classic Turbo to replace the GTI, but now my savings are all but gone due to having to do so much work on the Sport.

The same guy is now selling a UK turbo for £1695, but I'd like to know if he's trying his luck with it or is it really like what he's made it out to be in the advert.

I got ripped off on my latest scooby, the car was the best id looked at,completely stock, full service history etc,it had just had headgaskets replaced and a load of other bits that were likely to go wrong such as sensors etc.In fact it was so good(or so i thought )i offered the full£3500 asking price, two weeks later the bottom end started to rattle.
When i took it to the garage that done the headgaskets they told me that they warned the previous owner that there were signs of bottom end failure and that the owner didnt care as he was going to sell it.I had no leg to stand on as the garage wouldnt give evidence against one of his good customers.
I had thought about taking it out on his new 05 WRX PPP.

Horror stories like this seem the norm with subarus.
I bought a lemon from an old boy, I honestly dont think he knew how bad it was.
He got shafted by S *** V indictive A rsehole importers. Im only a grand or so down on the deal. In his two years of ownership he had £2k's worth of bills and it still wasnt right. Thats not including what he lost on the purchase price.
I would never buy a scoob on trust again, least ways not without spending hours checking it out first.

I bought my last one (the one before my current one) on E-bay (titter ye not).
Decent enough value - JDM classic, "291 bhp" and went like a rocket.

First MoT (I had to put it through) - failed on emissions.

Apparently decat it and you get an additional 35bhp.
On top of 256 that equals - yes, 291 !!

My local - good - garage told me after the MoT that "someone has cut the cat out".

It is the same with all cars though, almost as if you simply HAVE to make the 'buyer beware'.

I once sold a car (not a scooby) and gave the guy a 'one month warranty'.
He came back two weeks later with it making an awful grating noise from under the bonnet.

My mechanic gave it the once over and said "there's a **** load of sand in the oil".
Regrettably I had to tell the fly boy that someone must have had it in for him, pouring sand instead of oil into it.

Very expensive attempt at a scam that was.

What's Latin for 'let the seller beware' ?

Ok i take few issues with this thread.

Firstly I'm no "Chav"

Fact of the matter is I'm no mechanic either, I'm sorry but I didn't know what was wrong, me and a mate managed to change the pads but couldn't change the discs, I put it down to the wrong tools. I never knew they were seized as I wouldn't have driven it if I knew that!

Funny thing is about this thread is. You sold me my current car saying it hasn't got any clutch slip. No mention of clutch slip on the advert even when I asked you said there wasn't, only to find out on the drive home that it does then replying on my for sale thread mentioning the clutch. So you knew all along the clutch was going even though I repeatedly asked.

Oh yeah about the allotment thing, it's just easier to say the owners before had a trailer than the owners before the last owners.

So fact is, I didn't mention that I couldn't get the current brake discs out. And you didn't mention the £650 slipping clutch. This thread is pointless. Like it or not everyone lies when selling a car even the person making this thread.

Anyways I'm after a Subaru again seeing as I'm 25 now. Wanna swap back Clutch is fine

Not everyone lies when selling a car so don't tar us all with your woefully low standards - there are people in this world who can not only spell integrity, but know what it means too

Well ok, everyone is an exaggeration, but you have to agree unfortunately more people do then don't even if its the tiniest thing. The fact the person attacking me about lying whilst she lied about the car she sold me is just hypocritical.

I never lied, I didn't know what was wrong with the discs, I imagined that the pins were just rusty or something. All I knew is that they worked fine, which was fine by me. Reading through her posts suggests that they seized a few months after purchasing any ways.

When I buy I have some simple rules:

a) If it's not worth the money on paper don't even view. It's not just that I won't haggle it's the fact haggling can be the seller's insurance against someone picking up a fault. Two fly boys, one selling and one buying. The seller knows the bottom end's on the way out, the buyer spots a couple of nearly bald tyres and offers £500 less. Need I say more?
b) If I pick up ANY fault that's not detailed on the ad then it's an immediate walk away. I can't be sure there's more, and as above I only look at cars that are worth the asking price.
c) If it looks to good to be true, then it is.

I agree but unfortunately by putting yourself on the same level you've brought this upon yourself. I point to my post above - it might be difficult to stay straight as a die when you've been a victim but imagine if you hadn't done it. You would have been an OP saying how you'd been kippered up whilst being open and honest, and all the posts would have been sympathetic, not antipathetic, to you.

I have to say that in my view the pair of you deserve each other.
You've both ended up with costs you didn't envisage. If either one of you had been up front there would still have been costs somewhere. If both of you were up front, you'd have known what you were getting yourselves into but there wouldn't have been this unfortunate public debate which has been embarrassing to both of you as I see it.
