Question

I was thinking the other day.... it happens!

All the talk about water jets to cool the intercooler reducing air temp, increasing air density and kicking out more power....

Before somebody shoots me down in flames I know that the AC draws power from the engine! I'm not sure how much but somebody will!

Imagine a cold air feed from the AC directly into the path of the air filter > induction...... possible benefit?

Plums...

thats an interesting idea.

wont be any good though, otherwise you would have seen it used in racing/rallying by now.

i havent done any calcs etc but some egg head would have.
It's probably a weight thing more than anything.

I've had similar thoughts myself. It can't be that hard.A waterspay is much easier to rig up though although limited by the capacity of the reservoir.I know some cars come with screen wash reservoirs that are topped up by rainwater so maybe this could be an alternative.

it's a valid point about racing/ rallying not using it.....

But don't forget race/rally vehicules often have a cruising speed of over 100 mph! Air supply is already very high....

Are you sure that isn't your fuel tank?I rigged one to a switch from a Maestro washer reservoir which held about a gallon of water and it didn't last long at all.

An aircon is effectively a heat pump transferring heat from one location (e.g. interior of the car via the evaporator coil) to another location (the atmosphere via the condenser). So theoretically by rigging up the evaporator coil to act as the intercooler, making it air to refrigerient (spelling?) instead of air to air, you have just made yourself a front mounted intercooler, with the condenser coil in its place, ala Rube Goldberg.
A water spray, on the other hand, works on the principle of latent heat absorption when water evaporates but is limited by tank capacity and weight penalty. In that case, develop it into an air/water intercooler, effectively recycling the water through a radiator mounted in front, again another FMIC in disguise. Maybe that's why these two methods are not in widespread use when you are just duplicating a FMIC in operation.
My high school physics stand to be corrected of course.

Question

Isn't it the case though that you are using more engine power to cool the air down (and pump it to the intercooler)? All this to provide more power from the engine....

Provided the gain was more than the use, then I could see the benefit, otherwise, I can't. Might be wrong, but I think this has been asked before?

Hanslow, if the gain in power is more than the loss, the inventor of the process has just created the perpetual motion machine and destroyed the first principle of physics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, E=mc2 notwithstanding.

Wink

Trout, are you attomising the water spray enough. Perhaps you are putting too much water onto the i/c where as you should be spraying a fine mist which is far more efficient

Just a thought.

May be of interest ?

I wonder if it can be adapted to use the air con to chill a water spray tank ?

Thanks

Or an ice maker from a fridge?I used the nozzles from some tescoes kitchen antibacterial spray and when powered by 2 washer pumps,it did a very good job of atomising the water.
