Got a bit of an issue with a paintshop that has worked on the P1 recently, I will give you the full story....

Stones came off the back of a truck and collected the front of the P1 so went through insurance to get a front end respray. Whilst it was there I mentioned a few other jobs that might aswell get done.

Originally quoted £1000 for the front end respray and about another £1000 for all the extra stuff.

Whilst it was there it had the following done:

Front Bumper and Splitter (insurance)
Drivers Wing (insurance)
Drivers door (insurance)
Drivers rear quarter (insurance)
Passenger wing (insurance)
Bonnet (insurance)
Drivers Side Skirt (insurance)
Windscreen (insurance)

Other jobs I asked to be done were:

Rear Bumper
Top Half of spoiler including lacquer of the carbon strip
Passenger Door
Passenger rear quarter
Passenger Side Skirt
Inside of boot lid (around the mouth if you know where I mean) and this involved removing the rear screen
Underseal and Cavity Wax
Rear arch lips stone chip painted
Paint supplied new bumper bars front and back
(they also charged me for "repairing dents" down the sides.....so just filling and sanding....something that would be done anyway??* And these were tiny tiny tiny little dents)

I had a bill of £429 in new parts as I got them to buy in*all new screws, nuts, brackets, the lot.

The car is only on 35000miles and was clean before, not a spot of rust or rusted bolts etc. etc.

In the end*I managed to get the*insurance to*pay out £3400 to the painter for the work, and this was just for the insurance covered parts- so they got paid VERY well for the parts covered and naturally I expected I would be covered and only really have my parts bill to pay and my £350 excess.

But the company in question still presented me with a bill of £3052!

So that is approx £6000 to do that work??* Does this sound right to anyone?* Sounds steep to me.....especially given I was quoted about £2000 to begin with! (albeit I wanted new parts but that only came to £429)

Anyone any advice on what to do here?

They are essentially £2400 up on the original insurance work, there were extra bits and bobs to pay for but think I am being taken for a ride!

Did you actually get a proper quote for the additional work you wanted doing...........or did you just say "do it" ?

Not a written quote but we spent a good 20mins going over it and what I wanted and was told it would be an additional £1000 for the work.

Have you asked them why the bill has tripled?

Firstly, I would ask for a copy of the insurance estimate, and final invoice. That should give you a break down of all the work carried out. For 3k you could quite well have had the whole car resprayed. If they've asked for another 1k on top to do your bits then, a total of 4k is more than enough. But 6k!!!! Sommat not quite right there mate...

Took them ******* ages to do it apparently......can't see how- it should be bread and butter to someone that does it for a living surely!?

Worst thing is I washed it yesterday now the snow is finally gone and found a raft of issues with some of their work....

Really not a happy boy.

It makes no difference on how long it took them to do it, it's not like bodyshops charge a daily rate for work. If you have issues with the work carried out, you could contact the insurance company and explain. Or get a quote from another shop for rectifications and present that to them. Just make sure the other shop charges in the same way. Either one will give them a kick up the ar$e...

I paid £5500 for a full bare metal respray with new front and rear screens including new fixings for the entire car. Although my car wasn't insurance work I did receive an itemised invoice for the work carried out.

£6000 does seem a bit pricey.
