My freind has a wrx ra rally car. Done about 7 to 10 events without too many problems. last week he had a bigger turbo fitted and a remap and without driving it till he went to the rally. Managed to do less than 2 miles before it blew a hole in the piston block. It sounded awsome with antilag etc on it. But seemed to be popping and banging all over the circuit without the lag switched on.

Not going to name mapper as its a trial ecu thats been fitted and the mapping is free. Is this what normally happens if potentionally mapped wrong. Cheers

 

Could be any number of reasons its gone pop. You dont say wether the engine was standard or build for the power output the car was making?

 

Its had lots of things done to it but basically standard internals etc. FMIC, decat up and down, filters and much more but on last remap it was putting out 260 at wheels on a td04 and a fair few events completed. Not the biggest amount of bhp but they are fitted with a 34mm restriter. He wanted more umph but when he got the car back it sounded awful under the bonet in my oponion. Wouldnt cold start etc.

It is a trial ecu. can they be plugged in somehow to see what was happining.

Not the mappers fault if push comes to shove......

Sounds like the engine has been pushed past what it can take. If thats what the mapper was asked to do? Then he/she cant be at fault really. After all your hammering a standard road engine on a rally stage. Its a risk and likely to go pop at some point

The early classic pistons/rods were not really that good anyway in standard form...Nevermind on a rally stage.

 

Answer to your question,
Yes, if a car has been mapped badly then it can all go bad very quickly if the car is being pushed. A friend on here had his standard'ish car mapped by a well known mapper on here and it destoyed itself within 100 miles.
Very difficult to prove its a mappers fault though, they are pretty untouchable really.
