Default Having a major issue and would love any help :)

Bought a 1997 impreza Sti few month back, bout a week after buying it when i was pushing hard in 3rd or 4th i was getting the odd kickback at 5000rpm, it would kick back once then go through 5000rpm fine to the red, it was occuring mainly during cold weather but im not sure if this was the reason. This first happened on a trackday at Oulton park, then occasionally on road use and then only bout 3 times at Silverstone which was good. Today ive gone to Oulton park again and it was constant all day but today doing it at 4000 5000 6000rpm mainly in 4th gear. I have been to see a specialist and he just said change exhaust and decat the car, then add daughter board and remap (£1300) surely there is a cheaper way to solve this problem?? im happy with the power would rather get this solved cheap and spend money on coilovers and slicks.

I would find a specialist who will actually look at the car rather than charge you £1300 for a new exhaust and remap (which is waaay overpriced).

It's probably had mods fitted without a map and probably playing up as the ecu needs to be checked, also get a second opinion from
Another reputable garage in your area and see what they say, but I think its due to not having the ecu mapped with the mods you've got on the car?

Could just be overboosting, check all the vacuum hoses are intact and not split etc

i was thinking overboosting, the issue is there is no obd port on this model, not aware of any mods apart from an ARC airbox, (took dump valve off) the block i took it to is a subaru rally driver and a good specialist but his attitude is "do it properly".
he looked at the car noticed the exhaust has been welded into 1 piece from turbo back, so he said get that off its a cowboy job, i think its maybe something to do with air intake, b4 it does it at high speed (on track 2day) it would make a screetching sound like air wasnt getting in then kick back, sometimes when it didnt kick back no sound?? hoses are all fine!!

Plugs, leads and coilpacks often fail at that RPM. When were the last changed?

So it's got a dodgy exhaust and air box and not been mapped, no surprise really, speak to any of the breakers on here and get an oem air box and filter, then buy an exhaust off them as well, should not cost more than £300, then speak to duncan @ race dynamics he's a mapper on here, he will tell you what else you need for the power your after, then you need esl daughter board and remap should come in at 8/900 pounds total, which is much better than £1300.

Unfortunatly this is what it costs to do it right, your other option is to return it to standard, then it should run ok and only cost about £2/300 to do that again speak to breakers they will have all the parts you need and know your standard spec.
