Newbi looking for an STi
Hi,
just joined the site as I thought it would be a good place to start looking and investigating the best STi to buy (thats the Scoob Version not the sexual one, lol!)
I have around 9k to play with give or take a few hundred quid and want one with at leas 320BHP
After owning a few performance cars in my time (106 GTi, Celica VVTLi 190, Mk2 GSI Turbo running 250BHP) I have decided now the insurance is down to a reasonable price to buy my first Scoob.
I was looking at the early Hawkeye ones but after reading round on here the 2.5 engine is not good????? so what would you recommend Version 9 STi???
HELP, lol!!!!!

For £9000 you might be able to find a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) 2005 model year Blob (54, 05 or 55 reg). You'll need to be patient, but they do come up for sale occasionally.
I'm biased, but it's the one I'd go for. The spec is better than the UK market cars (including, wait for it, a rear wiper!)
Stand by for blasting!

I would go for a cheap 2.5 hawkeye and get the lump strengthened if you want a newer car with all the creature comforts or as already suggested a Jdm version.

I bought my 2003 sti new and it's been a great car, great prices now as well. 2003-2004 cars (blob eye) do not have the DCCD, but don't be put off they are great cars.

Not to discount the earlier models as some of these look fantastic and if the right one came along wouldn't say no but I think I've made my mind up, now to find one, lol!
Thanks for the info people

I went for a jdm widetrack blob and find it superb, exhaust and uk fuel remap puts it right in the 320-340bhp range and a very good basis for further mods. If you can live without the scoobs burble then well worth considering. I went from uk to jdm and love it, but not everyone agrees. But my advice is widetrack blob, uk or jdm whichever you prefer

So silly question... ( i am a newbie too..)
Is the WR1 widetrack ? Was looking at one earlier and doesnt seem to have that line over the rear arch ?
Only reason I ask is that like a couple of people here I am looking at Subaru ownership again (12 years after the last one !) and thought that the WR1 might hold its value ? Certainly when i was looking back in 2009 (ended up buying an Evo VIII ) WR1 were arounf the 10-11k mark and still seem to be around there (if you can find one!)

No the WR1 is based on a 2004 car and isnt wide track, those were the 2005 STI's, they changed the PCD of the wheels from 100 to 114.
Your best bet (and honestly im not bias ) is a JDM new age wide track, better power delivery, more torque, more goodies but more expensive, insurance is similar/same to that of a UK car (which has less power )

Thanks for the advice ! I did see a lovely white JDM on the Hurst Cars website but thats 2003 so not wide track and already its top end of my original budget! The widre track JDM they have (also white) is another £1k...
But then, as always , cheaper does not always mean value !
As a freelancer though i alwayss have to consider whether I can convert my 'toy' (or second necessary winter car as the wife knows it as) into cash without doing my bollocks on the deal.... hence consideration of the WR1

It doesnt have a short shift gearbox, nor does it have a vf36 turbo (both are only on the Spec C), it has a dodgy k&n type mushroom filter which just sucks hot air in, no mention of a remap but has a full decat so that would put me off, the alloys are not BBS wheels, they are standard STI alloys with BBS centre caps fitted and its had the fog light put under the bumper, all the good places fit them into the rear light cluster so.... (you need to find who imported it).
The 03 will not be a wide track but still keep looking as these are the best Subaru's you can get
